Chapter 3
Baxter's POV
~1 day earlier~
"So where are we going exactly?" My friend Shiggy asked from the backseat of my Chevy Suburban.
"Nashville Tennessee? I think." I said, patting the steering wheel to the music jamming through the car.
"You think?" He asked again.
"That sounds promising." My younger brother Wyatt sarcastically added from the passenger seat.
"When will we get there?" Shiggy groaned.
"4-5 hours. Maybe." I received another unamused groan from the backseat, and heard him hit his head against the window.
"Oh c'mon! I just cleaned those man! Don't dirty them up."
"Is it going to matter? Everyone who cares is dead." I shut up. I mean, he is telling the truth, isn't he? No one is really here anymore. My neighbors, my friends, my parents. They're all dead, sadly. I don't even know how it started, or how it came to be. No one knows. It started about 2 months ago. My mother passed away the first fifteen days it was known to the world, and my dad? He couldn't find another reason to live when she died. So, he killed himself, and left me and my brother to ourselves, who still lived in the house.
Shiggy came along when we went around to scavenge, we went around to the houses we knew where once occupied, and I went by his house because I knew the guy. Well, I more than knew him. He is my best friend.
When I reached his house, he was hysterically crying to himself. He was going insane in his own home, as he watched his family lay to waste. By the time I got there, he was alone. I went to help him up, and as cheesy as it sounds, surround him with love and support. I brought him to my house while Wyatt went and took a turn gathering. I was nursing Shiggy into a stability when I heard the message through the radio.
We decided to give it a shot, because at this point, it seemed as if we all had no hope, slowly losing our sanity and was going to end up like our dead.
We had left the next day, packing the trunk of my car with two gallons of gasoline, a fourteen gallon food cooler, -full of food of course - and some hunting rifles and golfing clubs of my dad's... I don't know what the clubs where for, but Wyatt insisted they'd make good melee weapons I case we needed them. I packed up Shiggy in the backseat of my car with all the pillows and blankets I could find. I made sure to bring plenty of water too, and told Shiggy we where going on a big road trip. He seemed excited, and seemed like he was pulling himself together. I collected some boots and small things like socks and soap, and was on my way.
--
I finally passed the last road sign to Nashville. I sighed in relief. Shiggy had to pee the entire way, and wouldn't let anyone forget about it. Wyatt was asleep with his head leaning on the seatbelt. I smiled, and looked back at the road.
I was casually driving through the city, but... It didn't look like a city. Every light was off. We had electricity back in my home, why don't they have electricity? I don't know. I kept driving though, and followed a faint light at the end of the street. I came around the bend, to be greeted by a huge building that had almost every one of its outside lights on. It was pretty extraordinary. Nothing like I've seen in a while. I nudged Wyatt in the passenger seat, and he opened his eyes almost immediately.
"Is this the place?" He asked while stretching.
"I think it is. Wanna check it out?"
"Yeah. Wake up Shiggy though."
I nodded, and reached back behind me and shook Shiggy's shoulder. He slowly regained his awake self, and his eyes immediately went to the brightly illuminated building.
"Are we here?" He asked me.
"I think so. Want to come check it out with me?" I smiled. He grinned, and hopped out of the car.
