"Hi."
The rain was slamming down hard as Nade Hargur stood at the front door to the home of Dirian Lorakazor, father to Nade's fiancée Burne Lorakazor.
Burne stood just inside of the door. Her face was drawn; the usually radiant dark brown complexion was blanched, a faded version of the Burne Nade knew and her eyes were red from constant crying. Within him Nade's heart wrenched at the sight of the pain the woman he loved was in, pain he couldn't do a thing to alleviate.
He stepped into the house's front hallway and pressed down on the small mobile dryer device in his pocket. In an instant, a directed suction of air whipped at Nade and the drops of rain which had fallen on him as he ran from his car to the front door sucked away and disappeared. His light brown hair, the chiselled features of his face — lightly tinged with pink from coming from the freezing rain into the warm home — and his clothes and shoes were once again as dry as they had been before he stepped out of his car.
Nade reached out to Burne and gently pulled her to him in a warm hug. She was silent and pliant in his arms, not resisting, not embracing him. It was the way she had been for days. Nade released her; his warm, granite grey eyes stared into her glazed-over coffee brown ones and then he kissed her. This time, Burne responded; she kissed him back and Nade's heart lifted slightly within him.
After a few moments Burne pulled away. "I need to tell you something," she said, her voice hoarse and unsteady.
"Okay," said Nade gently. "How's your dad? Where is he?"
Burne's eyes lowered and she pulled nervously at the corner of her long, orange shirt, thigh-length over her indigo jeans. "He's in the kitchen, he's — he's no different, same as me." Burne sharply drew in a breath. "Nade, come with me to the garden, please?"
"Sure," said Nade, to Burne's back as she had already started moving towards the rear of the house. "But Burne, sweetheart, shouldn't I say hello to your dad first?"
Burne kept walking, didn't turn around, so Nade hurried after her through the spacious, silent house.
Past the front and rear lounges, Burne stopped at a door next to the kitchen, pulled it open and walked through. As Nade stepped towards the same door, his eye caught sight of a family portrait and the pain in his heart throbbed anew.
He averted his eyes from the picture and followed Burne through the door. It led into a glass-panelled conservatory, attached to the back of the house and situated in the back garden. Once more the sound of unremitting rain was the soundtrack to the evening but it was at a much lower decibel level, deceptively lower, belying the actual thunderous fervour of the rainfall. The curved, tinted glass walls of the conservatory were solidly reinforced several times over, sturdy and robust, and the density of the structure moderated the sound and impact of the pouring rain.
Burne walked into the long glass room, her footfalls swallowed by the plush, oatmeal-coloured rug which ran its length. Nade followed her in.
"I'm surprised you'd come in here," he murmured, looking for a moment at the rain slashing down outside the room before turning to Burne.
