"So. Serious casualties all round?"

Burne looked across the wide conference table in one of the meeting rooms at Reane Designs at Suranne Flank, standing by a window. She glanced round the table at the other Reane executive board members.

"I thought we were waiting for Kandas," she said.

"Hmm," said Suranne, leaning against the wide eco-reactive window regulating the room's climate. Her smooth, regal face was tilted upwards as she looked out into the sunlight, the hair of her sweeping bob full and dark with occasional silver streaks catching the streaming rays of the sun. "Waiting for Kandas ..." she murmured. Her voice was deep with a distinct, gravelly edge to it. "Waiting for the other shoe to drop ... just games I feel I've been playing for a little while now."

"Is there a problem, Suranne?" asked Madhuri Phara in her velvet, lilting voice from where she sat in a plush leather chair, her long, wavy, brown hair gathered and falling forward over her left shoulder. The premium black leather of her chair nicely offset the deep brown leather of her own fitted dress.

Suranne gave Madhuri a modest smile. "I've been advised, we're waiting for Kandas. Whatever problem I have can also wait."

Madhuri's sharp green eyes observed Suranne as she reclined in her chair just as the door to the meeting room swung open and Kandas walked in, smiling warmly.

"I guess I don't have long to wait," added Suranne, walking back to take her seat at the table.

"Sorry everyone, out to lunch then got caught in the rain," said Kandas, shutting the door behind him. As he did, he noticed some raindrops on the sleeve of his grey shirt and pulled a mobile dryer out of his pocket.

"I guess nothing ever works perfectly," smiled Kandas as he pressed on the device. With the suction of air which whipped around him in the next moment, the errant drops disappeared. "Not even a simple yet upgraded DryAce!" he finished as he strode over to an empty chair at the table, sat down and swivelled it round to face the table of directors.

He cast a quick flash of a smile at Madhuri which she returned with a level look and then he turned his attention to the whole group.

"So," said Kandas, rubbing his hands together, "who's up?"

The directors looked at Burne ...
