41 - A Path of My Own

The fairytales said

If you were good (and pretty)

and kind (and pretty)

You would be rewarded (and pretty):

I tried.

I tried to be good (and pretty)

and kind (and pretty)

my rewards were a corset and life

that squeezed me dry

(They lied).

But other stories beckon,

Other fairytales, they say

If you are brave (and lucky)

and sharp (and lucky)

and lucky (and lucky)

you will find a path of your own

If you try.

I have no choice, I listen

(The alternative

is to die)

I will be brave (and wish for luck)

and sharp (and wish for luck)

And find a path of my own

To fly.

(A/N: This poem is raw and painful for me. But  I hope it touches your heart and strengthens it, as it touched my heart and strengthened mine. Hope is a powerful thing, after all).
