Zach furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. Since when was there an Evelyn Summers in his class? He tried looking around to see if anyone was giving a sign out that they're his partner but to no avail. He only spotted some people excited, some annoyed and some anxious. And also something fishy in the back. He squinted his eyes to look better and saw a...book? No, it was person's head covered with a book. What the hell?
Zach shifted to the right a little and whispered to a classmate, "Hey, pssst, who's Evelyn Summers?"
He turned his head slightly to look at Zach with an amused look, "You really don't know?"
"Well, yeah. That's why I'm asking you, you dumbhead."
He looked taken aback by what Zach just called him but it was Zach Thompson after all so it shouldn't even come out as a surprise. He turned around to point at the girl at the back. "Her."
Zach followed his pointed finger and almost choked on his breath when his eyes caught 'the book'. There was no way she didn't hear the teacher calling out her name and Zach's and even more impossible that she didn't know who Zach was. He finally concluded that she was probably too shy to face him.
As soon as the bell rang, he swore he saw something ran pass him and out the classroom door so fast it would put The Flash to shame. He turned around to find the unknown girl's seat empty. So it was her who rushed outside, huh? He smirked, realizing he was right about her being shy.
Sorry, little girl. You won't be able to hide from me forever, Zach thought. He then packed his backpack and walked out, set on finding this mysterious person. Unfortunately, by the time he got out, the hallway was already filled with people which makes it practically impossible to find the girl, whom he knows absolutely nothing about, not even what she looks like.
He shrugged, deciding to look for her later and started walking to his 'guys spot' which is where he and his friends usually meet during breaks.
Evelyn tried to even out her ragged breaths after running like her life depended on it and only came to a stop when she finally reached the girls' bathroom. It doesn't make any sense as to why she would run away like that. Even she doesn't know the reason herself.
Maybe it was because of the fact that Zach had been curiously eyeing her through her book that she tried to desperately hide behind or the fact that it looked like the first thing Zach would do once the bell ring was to approach her.
It was probably both, she thought. She still couldn't handle facing him after their clash this morning. It looked to her like he was really pissed at her for what she had done. She wondered how he would react once he found out that the girl he's so curious about and the girl that had ruined his new shirt that probably cost a lot was the same person...
Sighing, she walked up to the mirror and flinched at her reflection. Some of her black hair strands were falling and sticking out everywhere. She even had some sweat trickled down her temples. How does one look like this just after a little running? Looks like she wasn't one of the athletically gifted people out there.
She pulled out the tiny elastic band that's been holding her hair up the whole day and let her jet black hair cascade down her back. Using her fingers to comb out her hair, she realized how long it had become—already to the waist. She then reminded herself to get her hair cut sooner or later this weekend.
Grabbing some tissues, she patted her face gently to get rid of the sweat, even pulling her bangs up to wipe the sweat on her forehead. Lastly, she pulled her hair up in a neat ponytail.
You're overreacting over literally nothing, Evelyn. He probably already forgot about what happened so just go out there and act as normal and calm as possible. Just do what you've always done—blend into the crowd seamlessly and no one will even notice you're here in this school with them, not even Zach, she assured herself.
