Fixing That Heart Shaped Balloon

There was just something about sitting alone at a restaurant on a Friday night that really puts your love lif into perspective. Maybe it's the fact that the couple in the corner booth are slobbering all over each other. Or that the dude next to you just asked his girlfriend to marry him. Or maybe it's the band in the center of it all playing the cheesiest love songs of all time.

I rested my head on my fist, swirling my straw around in my iced tea (still not as good as sweet tea) with my free hand. I had been in the studio for about eight hours straight and was not getting anywhere. All I had for my latest hit was, "Her eyes were so blue / I never could get a clue." Something about me was just... off.

"Would you like anything else, sir?" The sound of my waiter's voice made me jump. "Oh, gosh, sorry. Didn't mean to sneak up on you like that!" he gushed.

"No, no. It's fine. I just wasn't paying attention," I said with a sigh, running my hands over my face. "I'll take another basket of fries." It was my third one that night.

"Absolutely," my waiter said, taking my second empty basket and walking back towards the kitchen. I went back to aimlessly stirring my iced tea, lazily looking out the window across the restaurant.

That's when I saw her. She was short, shorter than me even. She had long, dark brown hair that fell in loose curls over her back. My jaw slacked a little. She was the most beautiful person I had ever seen in my life. She gracefully walked up to the hostess. Nothing else mattered to me, it was like she was my new source of gravity.

My heart started racing when she smiled politely at the hostess. I didn't think she could get any more beautiful but I was so wrong. I snapped out of my trance once I realized that she and the hostess were heading my way. And she was alone, a party of one just like me.

The hostess showed her the place where that one guy proposed to his girlfriend, which happened to be the table right next to mine. I could smell her perfume from her. She smelled like roses and happiness. I could barely contain myself. As soon as the hostess walked away I snuck a peak at her. Gosh! She was even more gorgeous up close!

"Um," I started, clearing my throat. "The roast beef sandwich is really good here."

She turned her head to give me a smile. "Really? Thanks."

I smiled back at her. "No problem. I'm Hunter."

"Nice to meet you, I'm Liz."

We talked the entire night. After a few hours I had moved my table and chair next to hers. I had learned that her laugh was the most amazing sound on the planet, that her favorite animal was an elephant, she absolutely adored roller coasters and, no matter what, she always had a pack of Reece's in her purse. She told me that they never melt because they didn't last that long, she was always munching on them.

All too soon, Liz lifted her phone and groaned. "Ohmygosh, look at the time. It's almost one in the morning! I really have to go." I smiled sadly at her and nodded my head. "Here, why don't you put your number in my phone so we can keep in touch," she said with a wink. I laughed and took her phone from her, clicking in my number. I took a picture of myself making a funny face for the contact before giving it back to her. "Thank you. Tonight was so much better than what I expected."

I smiled. "No need to thank me. Here, let me walk you to your car." She laughed but agreed. We stood up and started walking back towards the front door. Carefully, I slid my fingers threw hers. My heart stopped, thinking she was going to shake me off but she didn't. Warmth and joy filled every cell in my body.

"Here's my car," she muttered once we reached a dark blue car. She gave my hand a squeeze and just as she was about to pull away from me, I crashed my lips onto hers. I didn't even have time to think about what I was doing, I just did. She was surprised at first but she leaned into my kiss, reaching her arm up to wrap around my neck. When we pulled away we were both breathing hard and smiling like idiots.

"Yeah, you will definately be hearing from me sooner rather than later," she gasped. It was the perfect ending to a perfect night.

OOC: I was so tempted to end this with, "And that kids, is how I met your mother." but I restrained myself. Go me.
