They meet up at a pet adoption. Both looking for a new best friend. There aren't many people there since the place did just open not that long ago. So it's just them two and three other people looking around. Normally the store is packed because it's the closest one in town. So everyone knows each other pretty easily. But the thing is, no one knows Mac. He is also there looking at animals. He lives in the small town but never talks to anyone or bothers anyone. People say he's the devil because of where he lives. He owns the whole forest that is east of the town. They stay away from him because of the rumors that go on with the forest. People never come back. If they do, they never speak ever again.
Now Ava is someone who's very shy but outgoing around friends. She is also here to look for a dog because she just moved out of her parents' house and into this town. So a few people are getting to know her, but not everyone. So when her eyes catch onto Mac, her heart skips a beat and instantly falls in love with him.
For the first time in 15 years. Mac talks to someone. Ava.
They start to hang out for a while. Then she just disappears. People ask Mac where she went, but he never speaks to another person again.
