Anxiously watching the clock, Y/n thought to herself all that could go wrong tonight.
What if they're a total jerk? What if they aren't my type at all? Surely they are, they're my soulmate.
She pushed through a crowd of kids by the keg,and made way towards the refrigerator to grab a bottle of water. Turning around, she opened the cap,and as she did so,she made eye contact with him. Edward Kraus, the dreamy new exchange student from New England. Could it be him? She hoped so.
They walked towards each other, and Y/n felt as if she were floating. His jet black hair and chestnut eyes set him apart from most of the boys in Derry, not to mention his warm smile. Y/n's friends were convinced he liked her,but she was hesitant. She likes him,but she'd liked someone else for a longer time though.
"Hey beautiful," he said just above the music.
"Cut it out,Kraus." She blushed, then glanced at the clock again.

Her soulmate was bound to be at this party,it was the last time you could figure out who you were meant to spend the rest of your life with. If you hadn't found them by 12:00 am on New Years Day,you were bound to spend the rest of your life alone.
She quickly scanned the crowd, and her eyes glazed over Henry. He was already staring at her, something that's been happening too often lately. She brushed it off and continued the conversation with Kraus.
"You mind if I see the back of your neck?" He asked.
Everyone was born with an engraving of a symbol that said something about their personality. Y/n's parents had a cherry blossom tree, and she had a scorpion. She never knew what it meant, because she wasn't a danger to anyone. She kept to herself though, and does snap when she's irritated. Not to mention, she never lets her guard down around the people she's scared to love.
People like Henry.
If the person who isn't your soulmate looks at the back of your neck, you either spend the rest of your life with them,or die alone.
She winced when she felt his hand on her shoulder, trying to turn her around.
"I didn't answer,Edward." She felt someone rush beside her.
"Hey,do you mind leaving now? I've got some business to attend to with this here lady."
"I'm not moving,Bowers. I'm the one guy here who isn't afraid of you. So,if you don't mind,I'd like to finish what I started with Y/n."
"Yeah, see the thing is Edward...I don't want you to. So you might want to listen to Henry this one time." She said with a smile. Looking from Y/n to Henry,he scoffed, and headed to the center of the dance floor and danced with Gretta Bowie.

"I didn't need your help," she said as she drank her water.
"You were sure eyeing me like you did," he barked back.
"Touché," She smirked at him.
"I don't know what that means," he said in an annoyed tone, but his eyes were smiling.

Belch, clearly intoxicated, slurred out ,"one minute until 1989!" Cheers erupted throughout the entire house.
"Look,no one seems to take an interest in me,and it looks like I scared away the last guy swooning over you,and we have about 45 seconds until we don't find anyone at all. So,do you mind if I check the back of your neck? I mean,we have nothing to lose anyway, right?"
"I-"
"If I'm not your soulmate then you still have the choice to be single for forever...so can I?"
He had a good point. She took a deep breath, turned around, and lifted her hair up so he could see the nape of her neck.
"10! 9! 8!"
"Holy shit," Henry said just above a whisper.
"7! 6! 5!"
"What?!" She screamed.
"4! 3! 2!"
All in one swift motion, the kid notorious for ruining lives, the one being she was sure she wasn't going to get because of their differences, turned her around, and planted his lips onto hers.
"1! HAPPY NEW YEAR!"
It seemed as if the world around them had dissolved. Voices became muffled, smells faded away. Even the feeling within their bodies seemed to drift away. The feeling that stopped them from going after what they wanted. The fear...
of rejection.
