along the way!!—•°—•°—•°—
Karen's eyes slowly start to flicker open, becoming aware of the soft light peeking into the room. She blinks her eyelids several times before connecting with reality. Karen yawns and slowly places her hands on each side of her and pushes herself up slowly into a sitting position. She looked over her shoulder at the imprint her head left on her pillow. Her head pivots more to the other side of the bed. Empty. Karen let's out a long dreaded sigh. That's how she's been feeling lately. Empty.
She tries to snap out of that mindset. She takes that opportunity to stretch and wake herself up. One arm latches around the other and pulls. She stretched her legs out and wiggles her toes, awakening every part of her body. She turns to the window and observes the morning sunlight that was just that perfect harmony of color. Karen takes note of the flowers, the few bird noises, and that one lone butterfly dancing from leaf to leaf. She tried to find beauty and comfort in whatever she could.
She purses her lips together and apart multiple times making a smack noise. She runs her fingers through her dirty blonde hair, curling a few strands behind her ear. Her hands make their way up to rub the sleep out of her eyes. Karen takes one final yawn to bring her fully back to earth and out of the sweet escape of sleeping.
And then, it hits her. A grin slowly stretches across her face. It just gets bigger and bigger. The smile keeps growing until she's absolutely beaming. Her eyes are wide with little crinkles forming under them in response to her smile. Her nose is scrunched up, tightening her few freckles scattered out on the bridge of her nose and the apples of her cheeks. There's two curves on either side of her mouth that are connected to her cheeks, letting you know the smile is there.
An unintentional giggle is released with her statement to herself because it was so sweet and tender to hear out loud. "I'm seeing Claire today."
She repeated it again, switching her words up a bit this time. "I'm seeing MY SISTER today." It was so unusual to say out loud.
Her sister was her best friend in this entire world. No one made her happier, except maybe her boys. That wasn't the point though, because being with her sister was like how it felt looking out the window that morning. It was like the sun was always beaming the perfect tones. And breathtaking butterflies were always surrounding them.
Everything was absolutely perfect when she was with Claire. It was like they were both puzzle pieces falling into their place.
Karen wanted to continue in this crisp moment, but she knew she had to get ready. She swung her legs around to stand up. Her toes touched the cold floor first and slowly rolled onto the rest of her feet, ending at her heel. The smile hadn't left her face still. Oh no, that smile would not be leaving her face until the second she parted with Claire.
As she walked to the bathroom she continued to think about their relationship. Laughter was always so effortless. Claire's beautifully contagious belly laughs were bound to fill the room. The thought of those laughs made life worth living.
They didn't have to try around each other. Karen let her mind start stretching to all the pleasant memories. Like those nights they fell asleep on an uncomfortable pull out couch that's springs would dig into their ribs. They sure did make the best of it though. It didn't matter where they were as long as they were together. Their friendship was the most important thing to Karen. Even when they'd turn the lights off and could've sworn they were both off to sleep, they whispered their thoughts to eachother for another hour or so until they could both hardly keep their eyes open.
