MAY 2038.
For the next two months I divide my time between staying at home with Mikey and training. Will, my trainer, is only two years older to me. He hates talking about his past, but people say that his parents were killed ten years ago and he's been alone ever since. I can't even imagine what he went through...to live like this for ten years?
One day, Jack comes in with news that they are cleaning out the South District. Fuck. That's where Mikey and I live. Will, knowing this, says that he can come over later in the day to help us pack. I blindly agree, only thinking about where Mikey and I will live now.
After the sun sets, Will and I head over to my place. I watch as he looks around, taking everything in. I can see him struggling as he tries to hold back tears, but I don't pressure him to tell me what's wrong. When we reach the house, I unlock the door to see Mikey in the living room already packing. I walk over to him and introduce him to Will. Over the course of the night I watch as Will and Mikey laugh and bond over almost everything. At the end of the night I thank Will for coming over and say that Mikey has never acted this way with anyone since our parents passed.
"I .. uh .. used to have a brother his age.." He says softly, "Mikey is a great kid."
Taken aback, I look for something to say, I knew he lost his parents ... but his brother too? He looks at me, smiles almost discouragingly, and takes off. Almost immediately after he leaves, I look at Mikey - "Time to go." We look around one last time, take our stuff and leave. We walk for what seems like days until we reach this single room apartment in the East Den. We enter, not knowing what to expect, and are shocked by the amount of garbage that covered the floor. I walk slowly up the stairs with a knife in my right hand, as Mikey follows. We hear a noise come from the kitchen and jump back when we see rats running our from under the refrigerator. Glad it's nothing else, I drop our bags down and tell Mikey to start cleaning up. I walk around the building, making sure that we are the only ones here and come back twenty minutes later to help Mikey finish unpacking the rest of our stuff.
"This place is disgusting." He says staring at the trash that cluttered the floors.
"I know but this will have to do for now." I say trying to cheer him up. "I promise it will look better once we clean up a bit."
A couple hours later, I convince Mikey that it is safe to go to bed as I can see him clearly struggling to keep his eyes open. I watch as he lays his sleeping bag down by the wall and tucks himself in. "Goodnight, I love you." I say, kissing him on the forehead.
I watch as he falls asleep and slowly make my way to the window. I look outside, scanning the entire premise and begin to make a plan as to how we will get out of here. We managed to stay alive for this long, and there was no chance in hell I would risk our lives now. The world as we knew it was coming to an end, and I would not let us get dragged down with it.
