By the time the sun rose, I had already gone hunting and put the two rabbits on the fire. Mikey was still fast asleep, but I knew that I would have to wake him up soon if I wanted to train more with Will. After a few minutes, I take the food off the grill and wake him up.
"Mikey..wake up, I have food." I say gently rubbing his back.
Slowly, he opens his eyes and climbs out of his sleeping bag. I watch as he heads over to the bathroom, trying to turn on the faucet.
"Hey buddy, we don't have any running water right now, but I went by the river earlier today and there is some warm water in the bucket by the tub."
I see as he makes his way to the tub, stumbling, still groggy. He reaches down and grabs a handful of water and washes his face. After eating, I tell him that I need to go out for some time and he should stay close to home just in case I need to reach him. I kiss his forehead and exit the apartment. I walk towards the cove and bump into Will. He was making his rounds, quite stunned to see me coming in today.
"I thought you and Mikey would be settling into your place today.." He said confused. "Where did you guys end up going?"
"This place in the East Den. Total dump, but then again what isn't these days."
He smirks and asks if I want to accompany him as he finishes the rest of his rounds. I nod my head and we walk side by side, aware as to everything happening around us.
"You know...I haven't thought about Davon in years...not the way like I thought about him last night." He said softly, looking at the ground. "Mikey has the same sense of humor..."
Davon - his brother, I think. "I never knew you had a brother." I reply, carefully choosing what to say... "I'm sorry you lost him."
He looks at me, trying to smile, even though I can see the immense pain in his soft, blue eyes. I stop, grab his arm and tell him - "I am here for you...whenever you feel like talking."
"Our family was closer than most. I think it's because we lived in a single room apartment and so everyone was always in each other's business. Davon was couple years younger to me, but he acted mature than most children you'd ever meet. He was so sweet and caring...truly had a heart of gold. My parents were not around much cause they were constantly trying to provide for us, but they never failed to tell us how much they loved us. We were not rich...but it never mattered. We had each other." He took a deep breath and continued. "The day they died I was out with my friends. I didn't even know what happened until my brother's friend came running to me. He was in tears and covered in blood. He said that Starks entered their home and started shooting. He was out back with Davon playing with a slingshot ... can you believe that? The last thing Davon did was play some stupid game ... I wonder .. Did he cry for me? Could I have saved him? I'll never know now."
The Starks were a group of beings that took over long before I remember. They can be best described as robots with an animalistic nature to them. They don't have a heart and they see humans as targets that must be destroyed .. that's it.
After hearing all that Will said, I looked at him...unsure of what to say. A moment passed, and I held his face in my hands. "You have me...Mikey..Jack." I said softly. "We are your family. You might not have been able to save Davon at that moment, but I know he must have loved you with all his heart, and you never could have failed him."
Almost in tears, Will looked at me and kissed me.
