"Hello to you too, Ana," he replied. I look at him up and down, he was wearing all white scrubs and sneakers.
"It's Anastasia, to you, now answer my question!"
"Well it's been awhile since i've seen you, i'm a doctor here." he says.
It's been a year since i've last seen him, he hasn't contacted us since he went on a cruise with his new girlfriend but that was after his wife died. I'm surprised he even has a job, let alone being a doctor at one of the highest rated hospitals in all of Chicago.
"Since when? Last year, you worked at Walmart," I ramble. I was furious with him, he never bothered to call.
"I got my Ph.D in college and i've been working here for six months in the Infectious Disease Department" he says as he walks me to the elevator.
"Six months? You've been here for that long and you've never called?" i screamed. He looks at me with rage,
"Stop yelling, okay? i need to get back to work." he says. We stopped at the elevator and i realize,
"If you work in the I.D.D, why are you at this blood drive?"
"I'm collecting samples of blood from outpatients, there has been recent outbreaks in the area so this is routine," he says as he grabs a piece of paper and pen from his coat pocket. He starts writing and hands me the paper.
"Here's my cell," he says looking at me and starts walking away.
Before i could say anything, the elevator door was halfway closed as my uncle disappeared from sight. The blood drive began to close and the nurses started to pack things up, i picked up my phone and looked at the time, it was eight in the afternoon. No no no no no, i still have my Existence paper due today! Crap. I race down five flights of stairs just to get to the back entrance to where my car is parked. I couldn't manage to get down one floor without catching my breath.
I started heaving and i held the railing of the staircase until the floor door opened. A man, who looked extremely familiar comes out, stops and looks at me for a moment then asks,
"Oh Ana, are you okay?"
"i'm sorry? Have we met?" i say with a confused tone in my voice. I stare at this character in front of me to try to recognize him but i just couldn't piece it together. He had short black hair, tall- maybe athletic because he was skinny like me. His eyes are a sparkling brown, as if i were looking at an actual crystal. Then he smiled at me with his perfect shimmering teeth,
"Yes, i believe you work a floor below me?"
That's when it hit me,
"Oh my god, your Sutton Tinsley? The photographer and writer of the other division in the building, we occasionally have meetings every week to discus the samples that go in the Times?" i say taking in a breath.
He laughs, "Quilty as charged, so why are you taking the stairs?"
"Why are you?" i say looking into his eyes.
"I take the long way wherever i go to help me keep in shape" he explains. I knew he was athletic! Or at least he was trying to be.
Then the room started to fade, everything was getting dizzy as if someone was spinning me in a chair.
"Ana are you okay? You look like you were in another world for a second?" he looks at me concerned.
"Yea i'm fine... i just got light headed for a second." i say placing my hand on my head.
"Maybe you should take the elevator," he said mid laughing. He then took my arm, opened the floor door with his other and walked me all the way to the elevator.
"Thank you, i could've walked by myself," i say smiling at him.
"I know but i wanted too," he said pressing the button to the elevator.
"Are you going to walk me all the way to my car?"That's exactly what he did. He walked me all the way to my car, we talked about why i was at the blood drive and i finally explained why i was in the staircase. He even said he was trying to get a couple pictures of Kipton Mills but security stopped him way before he could even see Kipton in sight.
We arrived at my car minutes later, my 2019 Jeep Wrangler, four door and black tinted windows.
"Nice ride!" Sutton says.
"Thanks, i just got it a couple months ago, pretty proud of it to be honest. That's the best thing that could happen , to get your dream car." i say admiring the jeep.
"It's good to reward yourself," he says looking at me. I'm not sure if he knows he's staring but i certainly do, he's a gentleman and that's what i tend to look for.
"You wouldn't happen to want to go out sometime, would you?" he says.
I open my car door, stunned at his question. It took me a moment to find the right words, i grab one of my business cards out of my front console of my car. I handed the card to him.
"Call me" i say climbing into my car and revving my engine. I roll down my window,
"Goodbye Sutton"
"Goodbye Anastasia" he says smirking.I arrived at the office about an hour later. I pretty much walked fast all the way to my cubicle only to see that Heather's office light is still on. Damn, i was so caught up with Sutton i completely forgot about my deadline for my paper that's due right now. I sighed and placed my arms flat on my desk.
"Ana!" someone screams. I jumped and turned around so fast that i almost hit Heather in the face.
"Why? Why would you do that?" i testified.Heather, more of a boss than a friend. She has red hair, hazel eyes and that about covers how crazy she is. I admire her, that's what makes her a good reporter and most of all a good writer as well but that doesn't change the fact that she's a plain bitch.
She laughs and abruptly stops,
"You're late. Is your papers done?"
i look at her and back at my desk, "I'm about to start typing up my interview with Kipton Mills, he even gave me an exclusive."
"Good, if your paper on Mills is half as good as you say it is, i will give you a two month extension on your Existence paper." she confirms with a blank face.
"Wait why that long of an extension?" i question. I take my hands and take my hair tie around my wrist and wrap my hair in a messy bun.
"I've noticed you've been putting a lot of more effort into your papers more than the other workers and i want you to put all in on this paper, understand?" she states clearly.
At first i thought she was joking but i came into realization that Heather isn't one to play jokes.
"When do i start?"
She starts tapping her heels on the floor as she struts away, i turn around and turn on my computer when i hear her say, "You start now!"
