Change

I've never been so nervous in my life. Every nerve in my body is jittery and excited. My heart thumps in my chest, I feel like I'm about to explode. I pace around in circles on the squeaky white tiled floor of the airport. It's been a boiling hot summer in Texas and the heat inside the airport is practically burning me alive! I got absolutely no sleep last night, I was tossing and turning thinking about my future. A whole new life and opportunity out there. Why am I so jittery?
I decide that it would help me calm down if I sat. Me and my social worker (Sam) plonk ourselves down on an ancient tattered couch by a huge row of windows that wrap around the outside of the room. I lean my head back and close my eyes trying to relax. I can't, how am I mean to relax when I'm about to board plane that will take me to a new life.
To say that I'm happy to be going to Los Angeles would be a humongous understatement. The thought of living with my dream family in my dream life makes me feeling electrified!
"You doing ok?" Sam asks. Sam has been my social worker all my life, he is awesome and he understands how much of a big deal this is to me. I actually might miss him. NOT any other parts of my horrible life, I won't miss that at all, but I might miss Sam. He is the only person that might actually care about me in this world.
"Yeah, I'm doing ok. I'm nervous though but also excited. But also nervous. But still excited." I find myself rambling when I am anxious. That's when I remember. I packed myself some frozen banana for the trip. I unzip my manky, pale blue fjallraven kanken and grab a frozen banana.
When I found out that this was what me and my new mom Jess Conte had in common I was elated. It sounds crazy and absolutely amazing to be saying 'my new mom'. This is real. I'm going to belong to someone, I am going to have a family, I will no longer be Aaliyah James. I will be Aaliyah Conte. I definitely prefer it.
