PERCY'S POV
I pulled the weed, my sweaty hands finding a grip and pulling the stubborn thing out of the ground. I moved onto the next one, working in Miss Zhangs garden to earn my food, such generous portions, too. Hopefully, I would be able to provide my Mom and I a better life if I was chosen in the selection. I had entered my name yesterday, and the chosen names would instantly become as high as a three and have a chance to marry the kings daughter, the princess. The chances of a seven being pulled out were 1 in 100, but if I could outrank that 99 perhaps I had a chance. To hope was to be destroyed, but I couldn't help it.
Once I had finished, I knocked on Miss Zhangs door. With the wealthy house standing next to me, and many others on the block, I felt very out of place.
"Ms. Zhang, I've finished," I said, bowing my head humbly as she handed me fresh fruit and for once not stale bread. "Thank you so much," I told her. With anyone else I would've been reported and whipped until I learnt to be silent, but the kind woman simply smiled at me and closed the door.
I walked the miles back to my dirty subdivision, hurrying along before Gabe, the public enforcer, could spot me and find reason to strike me. Once inside my small cottage like house I dropped the food on the table, splitting the bread into two pieces and laying out the larger portion for my Mom, who would be on her way home soon. I filled up two cups with water from our rusty sink, placing them next to our plates. I ran a hand through my dirty, messy hair, thankful it was black so you couldn't notice the dirt. I changed out of my work clothes into something more clean, and waited.
And waited.
