It was finally Thanksgiving Day. All of my family was here, happily eating the glistening turkey my mom had made the night before. Everybody was either dancing singing, talking, or eating. It seemed as if everyone was having a good time. Even my sister, Jewel, who usually didn’t like coming to family events, seemed to be having a lot of fun. She was my role model; my mom had us twenty years a part. So it was a huge age gap between us. Everything was going perfect; just when I thought everybody was here, somebody rang the doorbell.

When I looked out the peephole my dad had put in the door manually, I seen my uncle who had two unexpected guest with him. I opened the door and unlocked the screen door. My uncle stepped in the house. He was always so approachable and nice. He was always the life of the party.

Stepping in the house beside him, were two young ladies. One was obviously a grown woman, who was dark skinned and she had black shiny hair that stopped at her shoulders. She had a warm smile and a kind heart, I supposed. She smiled at me, which made me feel warm inside. She had on a black polo shirt, with designer jeans. With the black shades on her hair to match, she looked like she could’ve been a movie star.

My uncle put his arm around her and looked down at me. “This is my fiancée, Latoya. She will become you’re aunt July 14, 2008.” My uncle glanced at her, who looked frantically nervous. I could tell from personal experience that she was worried about how my family would introduce her to her new life. She repeatedly rubbed her hands together, as though she was stopping herself from having a breakdown. Her smile shown past her fear, I realized.

Taking my attention of Aunt Latoya (might as well become used to calling her that); I looked at the girl next to her, who I supposed was her daughter.

“Now, this is Camille,” My uncle placed his other hand on her shoulder. She looked petite, like me. She had light brown eyes that really brought out her skin tone. Her lips were curled up in a frown, as if she didn’t feel welcomed. She had the same actions as her mother, but instead of rubbing her hands she would flip her hair over her shoulder. She had braids that wrapped over her head like a snake curled up in a nest. “You two should get to know each other.”

Camille and I just stared at each other awkwardly. We didn’t say anything to each other but a mellow hello. She looked around the room, looking at all the details. I didn’t know what to do, so I just stood there staring at them. They looked like a perfect family. But before I started daydreaming, my mother flew around the kitchen corner, with her favorite apron on. Her smile brightened up the room, like the sun finally coming out during a long thunderstorm.

She gave my uncle a kiss on the cheek. “Hey Steve,”

She then looked at Aunt Latoya. “Hey. Can’t you believe it, a new sister-in-law?” My mom hugged her, which seemed to relax my aunt.  Before she gave me an order to do, I walked up the carpet stairs to my bed room.

My bedroom was decorated like a princess. My walls were sky blue, which matched my bedspread and walls. As soon as you walked in, you saw a queen bed, which was way too big for someone my size. On the left of my bed, were four closest mirrors, which had all my casual and church clothes inside of it. On the right of my bed was my designer dresser, which did have a mirror but I had to take it down for more space. Above my dresser was a 50 inch TV screen. In front of my bed was a chalkboard with a rainbow on it. Instead of my room being empty, I found it occupied by my two cousins and nephews.

My oldest cousin was Damien, who was the most aggressive person in the room. When we were younger, we would wrestle each other for fun. I used to have a small crush on him, but I didn’t know he was related to me until just recently. His sister, Shyla, was the shyest one in the room. Her hair fell to the middle of her back, which was currently in a long braid. She had fake eyelashes and she was so tall that she had to bend down to get past our small hallway. They were both sitting on my bed playing Mortal Kombat: Final Alliance.
