“You’re cute,” I heard a voice chuckle.

I opened my eyes, to see a Caucasian teenager looking down at me, smirking. He had dark brown eyes, and a faded mustache. His hair looked more ruffled then it should’ve been. I found him quite attractive, but that wasn’t the case.

I held my hand to the side of my face, rubbing my cheek, which made me cringe. “Oww,” I moaned to myself.

“It’ll heal up; I didn’t hit you that hard.” The teen said, still smirking.

“Who the hell are you?” I said very casually. I didn’t want to curse but I was too confused to not have the right too.

“My name is Delvin Parks.” He answered, ignoring the harshness in my question.

I ignored him, and looked around the room. It was dorm shaped, and the walls were silver. Behind Delvin was a huge screen with many buttons below it. The floor was also silver, and tools were scattered all over the tables. It looked like a laboratory.

“Where am I?”

“I’ll explain right now,” Delvin stopped to cough, and looked back up at me. “Camille is fine; I had to make her disappear from your eyesight at this moment.”

I opened my mouth, but Delvin kept talking. “Before you ask, I am the one who called you, Scarlet. Also, don’t interrupt me while I’m talking, I have limited time to share all of this information. Let me get right to the point: You and your cousins’ relationship will be in jeopardy. Apparently, her real dad and her regular new family are having slight disagreements on who should keep the full custody. It doesn’t make any sense now, but your uncle is going to tell your mom about how Camille has been lying to avoid being where she is so she can live with her father. It seems like she just wants to be with her dad. Eventually, she will get what everyone thinks she wants, which is to be with her dad. Sooner or later, all of the custody battle will keep both of you from seeing each other. You can still call and chat with each other, but you won’t be able to actually see each other into who knows when. Any questions you have in mind?”

I had a headache from listening to all of that mumbo jumbo. I asked questions anyway, not knowing what else to say. “Why are you telling me all of this anyways?”

“Well, I need you to go into the future to fix this before it happens.” Delvin’s eyes narrowed towards me.

“Go to the what?!” I asked, knowing this must be a dream.

“To the future,” Delvin said calmly.

“How do you know me?” I asked slowly, apprehensive of the answer.

“I stalked your Facebook.” Delvin smiled sheepishly at me; he was too cute to not smile back.

“Well, I don’t believe you.” I said, crossing my arms across my chest.

“I know you don’t, it doesn’t sound believable. But you have to do this.”

“And what if I don’t?” I said feeling clever.

“You won’t be able to see Camille again.” He frowned.

I narrowed my eyes down at my legs, a cloud of doubt and nervousness flushed into me. Camille was my closest cousin. I really don’t believe this dude, but what if what he was saying was true? I don’t want to be gullible, but I would sacrifice my life for her. I didn’t want to do whatever I had to do, but if it was for Camille, then I would do it.

“What about my mom?” I asked, suddenly realizing how dark it must be outside now.

“I took care of all of that, I frozen the time out in the real world. Everything will be the same when you finish your mission.”

“What are you, magic or something?” I retorted, not believing all of this stuff he’s been telling me.

“I can’t really tell you. I’ve been sent on this mission from my master. I’m not a slave or anything, and I’m not getting paid. But it’s something mentally installed into my head, as of rules on what and what not to do. He explained everything I have to do. I have to mentor you, I won’t be right beside you on your neck, but I do have to make sure you get this right.” His eyes glimmered in the small light that flickered from the ceiling.

“Well, let’s get to it,” I said reluctantly with a small sigh escaping my mouth.

“Come on,” Delvin said, walking towards a door I didn’t notice. He put in a password I couldn’t identify, and the door opened sideways, allowing us to pass through.

Inside was the same as in the other room, but instead of tables in the center of the dome, it was a portal. The colors blended in with each other. It looked like an ocean at sunset. I stared at it in amazement.

“Let’s go,” Delvin said, urging me to move forward.

I moved slowly towards it, but before I could start walking for real, Delvin grabbed my hand. I wanted to pull away, but the way it felt made me feel calm and more sure about whatever I was getting myself in to. I looked at him from the corner of my eye, and he was staring at me.

“What?” I asked, furrowing my eyebrows.

“I like the way your hands feel,”

“Cool story bro,” I asked, trying to show my dominate side. I didn’t want Delvin to think he had to guide me through everything, even though that honestly felt like the best choice.

Before my mind could wander any more than it just did, I felt a jerk on my arm, and soon I felt myself going through the portal.

I felt myself in a new atmosphere when the portal was finished carrying us to wherever we were going. We fell to the floor painfully, Delvin’s hand still in mines. I pulled away shyly. I didn’t want to catch any feelings for him, or vice versa.

I looked at my surroundings. I was on a yellow school bus. I was sitting behind Camille. I could recognize the French braid I have gave her the last day I saw her in real life. Delvin was sitting next to me.

“Okay,” Delvin said to me, loud enough for me to hear but nobody else. “I need you to convince Camille to go somewhere with you, like the park.” He said as if it was the simplest task in the world.

“How am I supposed to do that? I’m only a stranger to her! I’m not disguised as myself; I can tell by these nasty rags on me you call clothes.” I snapped.

“Calm down,” Delvin said his hands rose up in the air innocently. “You’re not a complete stranger. You’re one of her peers. Ask to go study or something girls do. Just make sure she doesn’t go to the main building to get her key. She lost hers and she isn’t supposed to go to the office. Otherwise, that can trigger this plan to fail.” Delvin shrugged his shoulders.

I was aggravated by how he said these things like they were easy. I don’t know how to act like anybody other than myself.

“Go!” Delvin said, pushing me off the seat. This was Camille’s bus stop.

I gulped and watched Camille normally get off the bus stop. I followed behind her, others trying to get pass me since I was moving so slow. I didn’t know how this was going to work. I eased myself off of the bus and wiped my hands on my pants. I was way too nervous to do this. Delvin waved to me still sitting in his spot. The bus sped off, carrying him with him. I sighed heavily. This is so stressful.

“You’re kind of in my way, Shelby.” Camille pushed pass me lightly. I knew she wasn’t trying to be rude; she just didn’t have many manners. I took a deep breath. This is it.
