"Alpha?"
I didn't move to greet the voice. Instead, my Beta came closer. He stood beside me and I glanced across, finding him staring at the bloody grass before us. Dax's hand rested on my shoulder.
I sighed, "I..." The words found themselves lodged in my throat. I had so much to say but nothing was right. Dax squeezed my shoulder, gently turning me towards him.
"I am sorry for your loss. Jenna will receive a proper burial with the respect she deserves." My throat burned. All I could do was nod in response, afraid of the sound of my own voice.
"It is time to come inside now," I nodded again. The sorrow in Dax's face physically hurt. My heart ached and my wolf whimpered. I pulled Dax toward me, embracing him as I once did when we were younger. His arms clapped my back before he pulled away.
He did not need to say anything nor did I. Dax turned away from the dry blood completely, leaving me again. This time I too turned away, allowing an emptiness to fill my chest. I did not head towards my house, instead I found myself going to the one person I sought comfort. The same person who had created this hollow feeling. Scarlett.
The front door sung open revealing a pale, hollowed eyed Scarlett. Her hair was poking out at all angles of the loose bun it had been contained. She didn't hesitate to step into my embrace. I nestled into her neck as I pulled her into me arms. My wolf calmed in her presence.
