《 ZACHARIAH》

Being on the construction crew was exhausting and it seemed like we never had any downtime - often days would be getting up and leaving Alexandria at 5am and not getting back until 11pm or later some days.

We went to any of the communities that needed repairs or construction to be done, as it didn't make sense to have multiple crews for construction - we were all just based out of Alexandria, moving to wherever was needed for the day. It wasn't the easiest schedule to work around with anyone - but Alicia and I were somehow making it work so far.

I'd get back to my house at whatever time and we would stay up for an hour or so, just talking about everything that had gone on during the day or doing whatever else we felt like doing, only to then go to sleep and for me to get about four or five hours of sleep before getting up and repeating it all over again.

My one day off every week was mostly filled with sleep and then doing anything I didn't get to do during the work week. It wasn't easy work but it had to be done by someone and for as long as I was assigned to the construction crew - the someone that had to so it was me. Honestly though I wasn't sure exactly how my brother had done the construction crew as long as he had done it, and he had no plans of asking to switch to a different job within our group of communities.

Did I regret ever getting assigned to the construction crew? Definitely. Because it didn't make things easy for Alicia and I. Because I wanted things to be so damn easy for us at this point of time when we had just found each other again. But I was on the crew and it wasn't like I could just leave it and find a different job. There was a flow to things around Alexandria and the other communities when it came to job assignments.

I rolled over and wrapped my arm around Alicia's waist, pressing my lips against her neck. "I've gotta go in a few."

"Can't skip work for one day?"

"My brother's my boss, if I skip I get a lot more than just the usual hell that I would if anyone else was in his spot."

She laughed quietly, shaking her head. "Get out of here and get to work then." She said, rolling over and pressing her lips against mine.

I rolled out of the bed, walking over to the closet and grabbing out an outfit for the day, glancing back at Alicia with a smile before I walked out of the bedroom and into the bathroom to take a shower and change.

I looked over at Alicia as we walked through Alexandria. We were headed over to Leah and Siddiqs house for the every other week tradition that they insisted on - family game night.

"You should feel special, Leah doesn't let just anyone in on our family game nights. It's exclusive."

She laughed, shaking her head. "Luci's been going to your alls family game nights for the past three times. And yet this is the first one you've invited me to."

"Well I mean I just didn't think you'd be interested in coming to it."

"I think you were scared to be us in front of your family again." She said, nodding slightly.

"It's seriously not like that. It's just - I don't know. I just got in my head a little too much."

"Its fine. You've finally got the balls to bring me along to the famous family game night that you ditch me for every two weeks."

"Its literally just yahtzee and cards. Nothing all that spectacular." I replied, laughing.

"It may not be all that spectacular but they always do it on your and Ryan's day off from work and that's also the only day I get you - and until now you've been leaving me every other day off you have."

"Sorry." I said, flashing a smile at her as we walked up onto my sisters front porch. I knocked on the door, Siddiq opening it after a second.

"Hey, come on in." Siddiq said, wide smile on his face as he moved aside and let us in the house. Ryan waved from the dining room table where he was sitting between Rosita and Luciana.

Leah walked up, smiling. "Hey it's good to see you, Licia." She said, hugging Alicia. "I'm glad Zach finally got off his ass and decided to bring you over here for game night."

I stuck my tongue out at my sister, walking past her and over to the table. Ryan held out his hand and I smacked it as I took a seat on the other side of the table.

Siddiq followed me over, sitting down at the head of the table. Small talk picked up around the table after Leah and Alicia made their way over to the table, sitting down on either side of me as we began playing yahtzee.

Siddiq, Ryan, and I were standing out on the front porch. Siddiq had asked us to join him on the front porch a few minutes prior, seeming to get slightly nervous as he asked us to walk outside.

"So what's up?" Ryan asked, raising his eyebrows at Siddiq.

"I - ugh - I wanted to ask for your alls permission to ask your sister to marry me."

I took a drink from the beer I was holding in my hand, unsure of what to say. "Sid, you realize the worlds kind of ended right? I dont think marriage is necessarily a requirement nowadays."

"I know - but I feel like it's necessary for me to be content in my life, Zach."

"Okay then - I don't see an issue with it. What about you Ry?"

Ryan shrugged, "You treat Leah great, I'm okay with you asking her to marry you."

Siddiq nodded, a smile on his face. "Thank you both so much."

"No problem man."

I was riding in the passengers side of the truck, Ryan was driving as we were headed out of Alexandria for the day. "So what do you think about Siddiq wanting to officially - or as official as you can be now - marry Leah?"

"Like I said last night, he treats her great. I don't see any issue with his plan. And I mean hell if they do get married that means we have a doctor as a brother-in-law, mom and dad would have been proud."

"Yeah they would have. I mean you did the whole army thing, Leah and I didn't get a chance to do anything spectacular so they would have loved that Siddiq was a doctor."

Ryan glanced over at me, raising an eyebrow. "Hows things going with you and Licia? You all seemed pretty good last night."

"Yeah, we're good - this schedules been tough but everythings good."

"Sorry the work days have been so crazy - small crew, lots of jobs. It's kind of impossible to find any way to get more time off for everyone."

"Its not your fault Ry, I understand the issue with the scheduling."

Plus part of me liked the construction jobs we went on. Being on the construction crew provided an opportunity to regularly see the other communities. Although the majority of our work was being focused on the Sanctuary currently, rebuilding still.

I figured it was better than doing gardening and harvesting, which I didn't like, medic, which I didn't have a shot at being helpful at, or sitting around on a guard tower, which could get boring very easily. At least I was doing something with construction.
