Chapter 1

Lyra pov

It was a normal day, i wake up to my brother punching my stomach. "Get up hoe, we need to leave in an hour" I hear him spit out. I groaned as I got up. I looked in the mirror at my messy brown hair, acne and round glasses. I brushed my hair and put it in its normal bun. I put on my baggy blue long sleeve shirt and dark oversize overalls. I brushed my teeth and started my walk to school. My brother wants me to arrive early at school so people don't think we have any connection besides bully and victim. I got to my locker and smelled the overwhelming amount of jasmine perfume and the clicking of heels. I looked down and the clicking stopped meaning she was behind me. "Hey!" I heard a squeaky voice that belonged to Mary Johnson. "I have homework I need you to do. All of us do actually, for math, history and science." She continued. I was on the last day of my period and I was extremely sensitive with moods today. "No, how about you do your own damn homework and FOR ONCE IN YOUR FUCKING LIFE! LEAVE ME ALONE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!" I snapped at her. She looked taken aback as I had never raised my voice nor have I ever cursed. I realized what I said and prayed that I wouldn't die. They all looked pissed, a football and a basketball player grabbed each of my arms holding me to the locker. I looked around and saw my brown haired friend. His eyes widened and he ran to me as fast as he could only to be pushed to the ground by the quarter back. The jocks picked him up and slammed him into the wall facing me. I screamed out to let him go. They all smirked and one of the football players socked me in the face. My brother appeared and a smirk formed. He saw Colby trying to escape the grip of the 2 jocks and went over to him. My eyes widened and I started kicking and thrashing around to get to him. My brother grabbed his neck. "You know, this wouldn't happen if you would just ditch her. You could be set free of all this if you leave her." My brother said to him. "Fuck off, she is my best friend, I'm never leaving her!" I heard him say. I melted at his words and I felt tears roll down my cheek as I realized this was happening to him because of me. My brother shrugged and turned away from him but quickly turned back and punched him in the face making me gasp and fight harder. "LET HIM GO! HE DID NOTHING!! PLEASE LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!" I yelled trying to save him. I was pouring out tears and the two held him there and my brother turned to me and smiled. "I guess you will take his beatings onto yourself" my eyes widened. 3 jocks surrounded me and started throwing punches and kicks everywhere. I screamed out in pain and saw Colby yelling for help while thrashing around. He got one hand loose and tried to fight the other until they slammed his head into the wall, pinning him again. That was the last thing I saw and the last noise I heard was the teachers. What the hell took them so long. I blacked out right after hearing the teachers yelling and couldn't see or hear anything. Next thing I knew, I was in the nurses office with my head on Colbys lap. He had tear stains and a black and purple bruise on his cheek. My eyes watered up and tears fell off the side of my face. I had a throbbing headache and everywhere hurt. Colby saw me and new tears flooded his eyes. "I'm so sorry, Lyra. I couldn't protect you. I've never been able to protect you. I'm so sorry!" I shook my head. "It's not your fault Colbs. But...I want to move away...for a few years..." I said, my own words shocking me. His eyes widened. "W-what?! I'm coming with you!" I shook my head. "No, you're staying here." His eyes flooded with new tears. He held me closer and kissed my head. "When are you leaving?" "As soon as possible, maybe today" I said. He nodded and held me even closer to him. I rested my head on the crook of his neck. "I'm going to miss you so much!" He whispered. "I'm going to miss you to" I said back. The nurse came in and awed at us. "How long have you two been together?" She asked smiling. I didn't want to embarrass her so I just said 4 years which is the amount of time we have been friends. I felt Colby tense up but then relax. She smiled at us even more and got papers out of her desk. "You can leave whenever you want, but nothing too rough for the next 2 days!" She said winking and me and Colby. I felt my face heat up and I knew Colby was the same. She laughed and smiled at us. We stayed there for a few minutes before I got up and asked if he wanted to leave yet. He nodded and checked the time. School was almost done and I was happy I was out for almost 6 hours. I may be good at school but that doesn't mean I like it. We got up and left school. Colby walked me home and we both went inside. I called Jamie and told her I wanted to move in with her. She screamed and said to hurry up and come over. I laughed and I saw Colby smile. Jamie was a hardcore person. Black hair with blue ends, tattoos on her arms and hands and a LOT of piercings. I looked at Colby and booked my ticket. It leaves in 3 hours so I had plenty of time to pack. "Wanna help pack?" I asked. He laughed and said sure. We went to my room and looked around. I had nothing besides lame clothes and I knew Jamie would burn them and buy me different ones. Colby knew it as well and so we just sat on my bed talking. We took some pictures together to remember this day. We said our final goodbyes and before I knew it we needed to leave for the flight. We got to the airport and I turned around to face Colby. I bursted out into tears. I saw him fighting it but some still managed to fall. I ran to him and jumped on him wrapping my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck. He wrapped his arms around me tightly and held me close to him. We stayed like that until the guard tapped us saying the flight was laving in 5 and I needed to board. He gave us a sympathetic smiled and Colby kissed my head and I left him boarding my flight and preparing myself for the next 2 years.
