"And then.. And then.. You'll never guess.. He.."
Jenny smiled at her younger sister, Stefi, who was recounting an oh so interesting story from her day. No doubt it included her crush-'No. That was the wrong word. Her.. Infatuation... Her obsession. James, a perfectly ordinary and not even very good looking boy in her class.
"Well, then, then, omigod, then he looked STRAIGHT AT ME!!!"
"Wow." Muttered Jenny.
Either not noticing or ignoring this comment, Stefi carried on. "And I swear he SMILED!! RIGHT.AT.ME. Jen, I think he likes me, Jen, I- are you even listening?"
"Mmm?" Jenny looked up. "Oh. Yeah. Carry on!" Jenny lied, frowning at her phone. Damn thing was frozen again! She hit it, half listening to her sister, who was still going on, and on, and on about this boy.
Jenny had always found it hard to take her sister seriously. She had, although she hated to admit it to herself, never really understood that Stefi was another human being, with feelings and emotions just like her. Stefi always seemed to have more luck than she did. For example, Stefi was eleven, had had 2 boyfriends already, 3 best friends, and reckoned a boy liked her. And it was probably true as well. Stefi was tall and pretty and kind and was friends with everyone. Jenny was thirteen, nearly fourteen, had braces and glasses, her short blonde hair never went right, and she preferred to read the stories about him while everyone else was having fun. In short, Jenny was jealous of Stefi.
"Sis, do you think he likes me? Really do you? Be honest???" Stefi awoke Jenny from her trance, her anxious brown eyes big and staring right at her.
"Yeah! Of course! Stef, any boy is an idiot not to like you. And this James, he OBVIOUSLY likes you back." Jenny was trying to be nice for once, instead of staying in her room writing or reading. Reading about him.
"Wow! Wow! Wow! Really? Wow! Omigod! Thanks Jen! Wow!" Stefi, ecstatic, quickly kissed Jenny on the cheek, and ran into her room. Jenny felt a twinge of jealousy shoot through her body. Bloody Stefi and her boyfriends! She stomped into her room to read.

Jenny was ten again, sitting in the playground, surrounded by children in her year.
"You're such a freak, Ravenwood!" The words came from Timothy Jones. The boy she liked. The other children laughed in response. Popular boys and pretty girls.
Jenny blinked, and pushed her thick, sellotaped glasses up her nose. She was surprised to have been awoken from her story. About him.
"You nutter. What's this crap then?" Tim grabbed the book and yanked it out of her hands. Jenny felt a wave if bitter sadness, maybe even fear, creep through her body.
"No. Please, please give it back," she pleaded through her braces. They made her lisp a bit, and the children in front of her found this hilarious. Jenny blinked back the tears stinging her eyes.
"Please, I-"
Tim started laughing. "What's this rubbish? Oh, it's that Doctor creep you're always on about! What the hell? You're such an idiot!" He laughed further, this was echoed by the others around him. "My name isth Jenny! I'm a tothal creeeep! I readd rubbishhhhchh! About some non-exisssthhant madman who sthhaves the world!" He laughed and his popular, pretty friends laughed and Jenny felt hot, salty tears run down her cheeks.
Embarrassment flooded her body. Her cheeks flushed red, and she was determined to to make any noise. But, hard as she tried, she could not. She let a single hiccup out and what felt like the whole word erupted into hysterical laughter.
"Look at the ickle baby Jenny crying!" Sneered Tim. "A nutter and a creep. Just like her mum. Watch out, or you'll end up like her!"
Jenny felt her entire being fill with anger. Her tiny fists curled into balls.
"My mum always said your mum couldn't be trusted." Continued Tim. "After having you, at eighteen, and Stefi at nineteen. Sleeps around, did she? Good thing she's gone then. My mum said it was a relief when she found out she was gone."
That was it.
In a second she was on her feet.
"Give my book back, and fuck off, you loser." The words were out of her mouth before she could stop them.
Tim and the others stopped laughing. Tim looked at her coldly.
"Say that again."
"I told you to fuck off, you self obsessed bastard." She shouted. She was only ten, and she didn't really know what she was saying? But the others did. She grabbed the book back and ran off, just as the bell rang signalling the end of break.
She was beaten up on the way home from school. She told Stefi and Cathy, her foster mum, that she fell off the bus. Nobody seemed to care about the bruises that covered her body, or the blood stains on her uniform. Nobody cared about her broken glasses or torn book. She didn't tell anybody at home what happened or what Tim had said as he chucked the book back at her before running off to join his friends.
"She topped herself because of you, Jenny. Nobody loves you, and nobody will. Don't forget it."
* * *
Jenny dropped the book onto the floor, tears spurting down her cheeks. She lay on her bed, sobbing silently. Tim had been right. Nobody loved her. Stefi didn't really care. Jenny was just a source of advice. Cathy tried to be nice, but it was all fake. She ds given up with Jenny years ago.
All she had ever had was the Doctor, and she was starting to give up on him too.
