Being myself is something that I started struggling with in the sixth grade. It was that transition from where you're friends with everybody to then being categorized into certain social groups. It wasn't something that anyone talked about, it just happened. For me, it was harder than others because I made a big move from the city to a suburb where things were a lot different. People dressed differently, talked differently and their expectations were a lot different. I saw the different views people had on money, trends, and most surprisingly, other people. I'd never been in such a society where people thought they were more superior than the next person and I guess that may have been what struck me the hardest.
That time came and went and now I'm a lot more mature. I learned that we can't choose where we come from but we can choose where we go from there. I learned that you shouldn't strive to be someone else because quite simply, you aren't them. I learned that there's always going to be someone with more than you or someone with less than you and you're just going to have to live with that. But most importantly, I learned to be myself. If I'm myself I attract people who like me for who I genuinely am and not someone that I'm not.
If you're someone struggling with being yourself simply because of what others may think, I encourage you to do something because you want to and not because of what others may like or want. I encourage you to start your own trends and not wear something just because it's hot because eventually it's not going to be hot anymore and quite frankly, no ones going to care a year from now. (remember when Aeropastale was so popular?)
