Isn't it fine to be in love?

First day

It was a wonderful day to start a new school day, marvellous. Cole walked towards the school door for the first time in almost two years. As soon as he opened it, Anne, Diana and Ruby ran towards him to give him a big hug. In matter of seconds, Cole saw a new boy over the girl's shoulders. He seemed quite lonely. As soon as the girls let go of him, he left his things on his desk and walked towards the new boy.

- Hi, he said. 
The boy looked up to Cole and answered.
- Hello .
- I'm Cole.
- I'm Charles. 
- Nice to make your acquaintance.

And the bell rang. They all went towards their desks. When Cole arrived as his old desk, another boy was already sitting in his place. Cole took his things and sat in the last seat available, the one beside Charles.

Cole didn't know if fate got them at the same desk or only simple coincidence, but it certainly pleased him. He felt for the first time ever a wave of happiness taking over him, similar as the one he felt when he met Anne, yet completely different. Cole was happy.

The day ended quite quickly. Cole tried to talk to Charles all day but unsuccessfully. Cole left the school to walk to his little home he owned. It was actually Josephine Barry's property but when Cole told her about his desire to go back to school, she offered him, since it was empty. The house was not far from green Gables, within walking distance. Anne and Cole walked home together.

- What do you think of the new boy, Charles? asked Anne

-He's fine, quiet,  he answered.

-I can imagine. You two seem to have a lot in common.

- Do we really, Anne? He seems shy and distracted. 

- Much like you, I must say.

- Oh you think so? Because I certainly don't, Cole said, suddenly frustrated , I tried making conversation multiple times today with almost no success. He barely talked to me even though I kept asking him questions. 

- Give him time. He'll warm up, i promise.

- Fine.

Their way split and both of them got on home for the night. Cole thought about him, the way Charles made him feel, the way he made him feel special with only a few stares. Was that love or craziness? He didn't know. He felt like Charles understood him, as Anne did. Since Cole discovered his true self, his gay-self, he looked at things differently. It was confusing. Why was the first day so confusing? Why did Charles came to Avonlea? Why did he have to take the last seat? 

- Whatever. I don't care, he told himself. 

He cared, actually. A lot. He cared enough not to sleep and stay up all night long. He was exited yet stressed for the next day. 

In the morning, Cole left the house a little earlier to walk in the forest a little. It was a colder morning than usual, but not a disturbing cold. Cole stopped at a little river to eat the bread he had packed himself for breakfast. That's when he heard a noise behind him. It startled him. He turned around to see Charles walking. 

- Hey, Charles said. 

- Good morning, Cole answered

Charles seemed calmer, more relaxed this morning. 

- What are you doing in the woods at the time of the day? Cole continued.

- I like walking here. It reminds me of when i was younger. It reminds me of my sister. 

-Your... sister? Cole asked.

- Yes,  he said, sadly, she passed four years ago. We used to come here and play. But then my parents decided to move away. Now, they're gone and i decided to come back.

- I'm so sorry, i didn't know.

- It's okay. 

Then silence took over. A few tears fell on Charles cheek but when he realized Cole was looking, he wiped his face quickly.

- We should get to school, Charles said. 

Cole got up, got his things and walked with Charles to the school. When the entered the school, Anne saw them and walked towards Cole. Charles had already taken his seat.

- So? Tell me everything. 

- I went walking and met him on the road. Nothing much.

- That's everything? she asked, he seems more relaxed this morning.

- I thought so too. We talked a little. Apparently, he used to live here but he left with his parents around the time you got to green gables for the first time. Then he came back when his parents passed.

- Oh... So he's an orphan? Poor him. Maybe Gilbert and I can slide in a word or two.

- Anne... He's seems very mature about it.

- We'll be careful, i promise.

- Thank you. 

The bell rang. Everyone took their places. Cole sat. 

- Who's that? Charles asked, pointing at Anne. 

- Her name is Anne, she's different, like us. She wants to talk with you. She the kindest person i've ever met. She's like my sister. 

At lunch time, Cole, Anne, Diana, Ruby and Gilbert sat all together. Cole told Charles to join them, so he did. 

- Hi, i'm Diana Barry, she said as she offered him an strawberry tart. 

- Thank you. I'm Charles.

- I'm Anne. That's Ruby and Gilbert, she said, pointing to her friends. 

- It is a pleasure to make you acquaintance Charles, Ruby said.

-The pleasure is all mine, Charles answered. 

Charles looked at Gilbert. But Gilbert was looking at Anne. Gilbert suddenly felt a little jealous. 

- So, you're an orphan? Gilbert snapped. 

- Gilbert! Anne shouted, we need to talk.

They both got up and left the table. 

- Gilbert. What's wrong with you? Anne said, mad. 

- I think he likes you. You know how i feel. 

- And you know how i feel. You're the only one i love. 

- Promise? 

- Promise. 

Anne kissed Gilbert on his right cheek and walked inside. 

*MEANWHILE* 

- Why did they left? Charles asked. 

- I don't know, Ruby said, their couple seem a little rocky these days. 

- Couple? Charles said. 

- Yes. It's been a few months now, Diana continued. They used to have a love-hate kind of relationship. 

- I see, Charles said. 

The day finished and they all got home.
