The rest of the class was...interesting.
Lauren eventually stopped trying to embarrass me but I still caught her looking at me a few times which unfailingly made me blush each time. On top of that, Lauren seemed to attract almost everyone in the class' attention, even though she didn't seem to notice any of the stares she was getting. I mean, I knew she was attractive and all but they were watching her like she was some kind of celebrity. What was that about?
I pushed the thoughts to the back of my mind and focused on what the teacher was saying. He was mostly just going over the things we were going to be covering in class this year. The whispers around Lauren didn't die down for most of the class.
Twenty long minutes later, the bell rang out and we all moved to gather our stuff. As soon as I exited the classroom, I saw in my peripheral Lauren coming up to walk next to me.
"Hey, pretty girl," she smiled warmly at me, "what's your next class?"
I ignored the nickname and took out my schedule, "AP World History."
She clicked her tongue, "My friend Jordan is in that."
"With the scar?" I asked as someone we passed called out, "Hey, Trent!"
Lauren waved then turned back to me, " Yeah, him," she raised an eyebrow at me, "You guys already met?"
"Micah introduced me to him this morning,"
Lauren nodded as we came up to a hallway, indicating she did know who Micah was, "Well, I have to go the opposite way of you." She pointed past my shoulder, "World History is down that hallway, last door on the right." She smirked at me as she walked backward, "Sit with me at lunch, Ally?"
I laughed when she almost ran into someone but dodged just in time, "Yes. I would love to."
Lauren's smile was blinding as she whirled around and ran to her class. I chuckled and shook my head at her antics. I rushed to my class before the bell rang, all the while, with a dumb smile on my face.

Three periods later, the bell rang for lunch and I quickly gathered my stuff to put into my locker. I hadn't had any other classes with Lauren but I did have a few with the guys and one with my sister but when she saw me walk in, she just glared then turned to a girl next to her, whispered something, and they both laughed. I ignored them that class, and thankfully, that was my only encounter with Veronica. Other than that, the day had turned out much better than I expected.
I sighed in relief as the lock on my locker finally gave after five minutes of me pulling on the door for it to open. Just as I was about to put my books inside, a loud yell behind me caught my attention.
"You're a real asshole, you know that Trent?" a male, angry voice yelled.
I turned around, curious about what they were arguing about. My eyes widened as I saw Lauren facing off against a guy I recognized as a senior named Lance, who sat next to me in my Calculus class.
Lauren glared hard as Lance, who was about the same height as her, started getting closer, "Back up, Lance. It was a fair vote and you know it."
Lance scoffed and his eyes blazed with anger, "Yeah fucking right. There ain't no way a dyke was voted into my spot as captain of the team."
Lauren smirked but there was no humor on her face, "Not your fault you don't have good people skills, Lance. With your head as far up your ass as it is, who can blame you?"
Lance's nostrils flared and he lunged forward. My breath caught as his fist caught the side of Lauren's face, knocking her head to the side. My heart started racing and I looked around to the other students gathering around the fight. Nobody seemed to want to stop the fight. Some stood with excited expressions, others with their phones out recording, but none trying to stop it. I turned back, just in time to see Lauren punch Lance in the mouth, her hand coming back bloodied.
Lance pushed her back a step and she fell against the lockers. He moved to get on her but she kicked up with her foot, catching him in the stomach.
Not wanting anyone else to get hurt and wanting to keep Lauren out of trouble, I ran forward in between them with my hands up, "Guys, come on, just calm down. I'm sure we can-"
Lance lunged forward, stopping just in front of me. My heart was racing but I kept my ground and thanked whatever god there was for all the years I had learned how to keep my emotions from showing on my face with my mother.
He glared down at me, "Mind your own damn business, runt."
I met his gaze and willed my body not to shake, "No one wants to get in trouble here, Lance. A teacher is going to come out here soon and wonder what y'all are doing in the hallway, and I don't think they'll like the answer you're going to give them." I took a deep breath and pushed through the pain of tilting my neck far back to look at him.
Curse my shortness.
My confidence building, I continued, "So, you have two choices. You can either tackle me out of the way and start fighting again until you either get knocked out or suspended. Or you can walk away and we all forget what just happened. Right, Lauren?" I turned back to her and found her already looking at me, a bit of a dazed expression on her face that made me worried. Hopefully, she didn't have a concussion.
She nodded her head slightly, "Yeah, sure man. No harm, no foul."
I looked back at Lance and met his gaze. At the very least, the angry fire in his eyes had died down to a burning simmer. He looked behind me to Lauren then back to me. He scoffed then looked down at the ground. Slowly, he nodded, then turned around and headed out through the doors. My breath left my body in a whoosh as the people around us started to dissipate until it was just me and Lauren in the corridor. Lauren let out a low whistle behind me and I spun around to face her smirking bruised face.
"That was seriously hot, Texas."
She laughed as I rolled my eyes, a soft smile playing on my lips as we headed to lunch.
