The rest of the day passed on without incident. I learned I shared most of my classes with one of the guys or Lauren. Before getting on the bus with Micah, I got everyone's number and was added to the group chat that all of them had started.
"So," Micah started as we sat down, "how was your first day with the gang?"
I smiled, "It was great. I didn't think I would be able to make friends so easily here,"
He raised an eyebrow, "How many friends did you have back in Texas?"
I stiffened, remembering all my lonely times back in Texas, "Oh, lots! I mean, so many friends like... so...many,"
Smooth, Allison, very smooth.
Micah glanced at me suspiciously but didn't contradict me, "Anyways, there's no way they wouldn't have loved you once they met you. You fit right in," he gave me a playful bump with his shoulder as I felt a warmth spread through my heart. I could get used to having more than myself to talk to.
We spent the rest of the bus ride talking about nothing important, just simply enjoying each other's company. Then a few miles away from my stop, Micah asked, "So, what do you think of Lauren?"
I could feel my face get hotter as I avoided eye contact, pretending to watch something out the window, "She's nice, I guess,"
I could hear the smug smirk in Micah's voice, "Just nice?"
I chuckled nervously, messing with the hem of her jersey that smelled like her, "I only just met her,"
He sounded close to laughing, "So, she made no impression, whatsoever?"
I flushed brighter remembering how she looked at me when she first walked into the classroom and then again when I was fixing her up in the nurse's office. "I wouldn't say that," I mumbled.
Micah finally let out the chuckle he had been holding on to, "I'm sorry, Ally, but your face is too much," He breathed in and seemed to force himself to calm down, "Lauren usually doesn't take to people as she did with you. She's like a cat, deeming only certain people worthy of her respect and you seem to already have her wrapped around your little finger,"
"I don't know abo-"
Micah cut me off with a look, "She gave you her game jersey which is extremely important to her and was trying to flirt with you all through lunch and gave you some of her food. I've been her best friend for seven years and she's never once shared her food with me,"
My eyes widened and surprise hit me. I hadn't been trying to attract too much attention to myself but I couldn't deny the warm feeling that grew at knowing that Lauren might like me. But the feeling was quickly squashed as we pulled in front of my house. I quickly remembered about my mother and father and the disapproving looks that constantly followed me around for simply existing. I didn't want to clash the brightness of Lauren with the harsh coldness of my family.
I smiled tightly at Micah, preparing myself for whatever waited inside, "I'll see you tomorrow, Micah,"
His brows furrowed slightly in concern but he simply waved and reminded me to text him as I got off the bus. I slowly made my way up the drive and took a deep, steadying breath before entering.
Welcome back to your cell, Allison.

*Four hours later*
I sighed in relief as I finished the last box of the first floor. The kitchen was now clean and all our stuff was neatly put in its place, along with my room, Veronica's room, Mother and Father's room, the living room, the dining room, and the kitchen. I was aiming to be done before Mother got home and I only had the bathrooms to complete. Hopefully, with completing my tasks, Mother would be in a good mood and say yes to the dance team and cheerleading.
