period three.
i head into my history classroom and take a seat in the second row. i pull my binder, notebook and pencil case out of my backpack. students shuffle into the classroom quietly. tons of new faces i haven't seen before. and then, i see him.
tj walked into the classroom with his head held high. we lock eyes and he smiles. he confidently strides into the seat next to mine.
"ready for history?" he says.
"more than ready!" i say positively.the teacher walked into the classroom placing his briefcase on his desk. he loosened his tie and began writing on the white board.
"good afternoon everyone. everyone seems to be very quiet this year... but i know this won't last long. we'll start this class by getting to know your classmates. get into groups of four and answer the three questions on the board. write your answers on a piece of lined paper and hand it in at the end of the class. begin!"
the teacher nodded his head for us to commence. tj looked at me and gave a half-smile.
"we need two more people to join our group" he said.
i turned around to the desks behind tj and i to find two girls looking around. they didn't look like they knew eachother, or anyone else in the class.
"hey, do you guys want to be in our group?" i asked.
"sure!" one said, the other nodded. the girls introduced themselves.
"hi, i'm abby!" she said assertively. she had short wavy blond hair. her eyes were a beautiful shade of blue. she looked like my good friend amber, in a way.
"i'm michelle!" she said shyly. she had long dark brown hair, brown skin, and brown eyes.
"i'm cyrus and this is tj, nice to meet you guys!"
"you too! do you guys think this teacher is a bit of a pain? like, he didn't smile once! and now we have to do work? ugh." abby said.
"well not really, i think it's cool he didn't lecture us for the whole class!" i said.
"yeah he seems pretty chill, not to strict, not to easy-going." tj said.
"well i don't like him. and plus there's a rumour going around that he's gay. so gross!" abby uttered with disgust.
my heart started beating fast while i looked down. tj looked down as well and didn't say anything. michelle had a shocked face yet also stayed quiet.
although i felt uncomfortable, i decided to speak up.
"what's so gross about gay people?" i asked abby. she looked surprised that i questioned her. it was like she was so used to everyone agreeing with her.
"ugh...don't tell me you're gay..." she said while making a face.
"it shouldn't matter of i'm gay or not. they're people. they're human. and they aren't worth any less than you." i said with confidence.
tj slightly raised his head. from the corner of my eye i could see a smile, although faint.
michelle smiled at me while abby angrily got up and left our group.
i let out a big sigh and continued,
"well, let's work on these questions, shall we?"
