Both Ashton and Michael look up to see who had burst into the classroom, loudly announcing their arrival. A tall boy with tanned skin and hazel eyes. Calum Hood. Ashton knew this was going to happen, he just didn't know it was going to be now. That's the problem with seeing the future. Ashton hears a clatter beside him, and turns to see Michael sprawled on the floor, chair tipped over.
"Is there a problem, Mr. Clifford?" Mr. Terrance raises an eyebrow. Michael scrambles to his feet, cheeks reddened. He picks up his chair and sits down, face burning. Ashton snickers.
"Not at all sir," Michael says, shooting a glare in Ashton's direction. He blinks at his best friend and smiles innocently. The green-haired boy responds with a scowl.
"Good. Calum, take a seat. You're lucky this is only your first time. Tardiness is not tolerated in my class," Mr. Terrance says sternly. Ashton rolls his eyes and looks back at his worksheet. He finishes it easily and taps his pencil on his desk. The bell rings and everybody hands in their work.
"Class dismissed," The teacher nods. Ashton and Michael follow the flow of the crowd, and soon they're surrounded by noisy students. They head to their lockers and put away their books.
"So what was the deal with you in Physics?" Ashton smirks.
"He literally had nothing to do with it," Michael says. "I leaned back too far and I fell."
"Sure," Ashton says, not really sure how to reply to that. He wants to laugh, but he knows Michael will kill him for that. He laughs anyway, but a hard glare from his best mate silences him. Ashton's phone beeps, and he pulls it out to read the reminder.
Reminder: Niall asked you to sit with him at lunch.
"Mikey, Niall asked me to sit with him at lunch," Ashton says.
"I know," Michael nods. "He invited me too."
"He did?" Ashton asks, surprised.
"Yes," Michael says slowly. "Why?"
"I thought he would be afraid to. I swear he's been crushing on you since year nine," Ashton replies.
"How can you even remember that?"
"Oh it's on a post it note on my wall," Ashton answers.
"Right. The wall of post-its. I invented that y'know. I wrote the one that says "Meow, meow, meow." It's lime-green," They arrive at the cafeteria and join the end of the line.
"Oh. I wondered who wrote that," Ashton says. Eventually, they got to the front of the line. Ashton bought nine slices of pizza, causing the lunch lady to shoot him a dirty look. He purchases two cartons of milk, one for Michael, one for him.
He found a note in his locker from a long time ago that Michael had sent him in Chemistry. It read that Michael was going through some financial problems. Ashton never threw out Michael's notes. He has a whole box on the top shelf of his locker.
"You're the best," Michael throws his arms around Ashton when he slides three slices on his nearly empty tray. Michael had bought a sandwich and an apple. That was all he could afford.
"Love you Mikey," Ashton kisses his hair and they quickly find Niall sitting at a table, laughing loudly.
"Hey Mike, Ash! Good to see ya," Niall greets them.
"Hi."
"Hey."
Michael and Ashton greet at the same time. Niall grins as they take a seat.
"We're just waiting for a couple more lads," Niall says, scanning the cafeteria.
"There they are!" Some kid Ashton doesn't recognize points. He's pointing at Calum and the kid from earlier. Luke or something like that.
