beep beep beep

The sound of a heart monitor sounded through Colby's ears.
He knew he was in the hospital. That was obvious. But why? He barely remembered a thing. All he remembered was Sam crying next to him.

Colby tried to sit up, but was greeted with a sharp pain in his side. When he looked down, he noticed a white patch covering the skin where a deep wound was.

His mind was still fuzzy, trying to remember all that had happened caused his head to hurt. The thought of Sam getting hurt raced through his brain. If that man hurt Colby, why wouldn't he hurt sam?

Colby tried to move some more, but was greeted with the same awful pain. Tears formed in his eyes as he imagined every horrible outcome. Was Sam dead? Did he get away?

He didn't care if Sam ran away. As long as he was safe, he didn't care.

Colby instantly wiped away his tears as he heard the door to his hospital room slide open. It opened to reveal a younger woman in scrubs.

"Oh, you're finally up." The woman said with a  kind smile as she wrote something on her clipboard.
"What happened? Who brought me here?" Were the first words out of his mouth.
"You were shot. It's a miracle, really. You lost a lot of blood." The woman made her way to Colby's bedside. "The boy who brought you in didn't say a name. He was blonde, but he left almost immediately. Said he had something important he had to take care of?" She shrugged.

Colby almost started crying again, assuming that the blonde kid was Sam. If it was, that meant he was alive and wasn't hurt. But what was the so called important business he had to take care of?

"Is my phone here?" Colby asked curiously, looking around the room frantically. Maybe Sam texted him and told him where he was.

"No, sir. You didn't have a phone on you." The woman said truthfully, holding her clipboard close. "You'll have to stay here for a couple more days, just so we can make sure everything's going smoothly." She said before leaving the room.

Great Colby thought to himself.

All he wanted was to make sure Sam was okay. To make sure whoever it was that put up a fight was gone for good. Instead, he was stuck inside a hospital room with no way of knowing.

He'd just have to sit here patiently, hoping for the best.

Six days later

Colby's been doing good. He got up and walked with a doctor down the halls. Although his side still hurt a lot, it was definitely better than when he tried to move that first day.

His eyes became wide as he received the news that he'd be able to leave. He'd be able to find Sam.

As he gathered up all his things to leave, he took a deep breath. Sam wouldn't just...leave him. Sure, he had no way of knowing where he was. He had no phone.

All he could do was hope for the best.

Colby took the bus home, wanting to take a shower and sleep in the comfort of his own bed. Not without Sam, though.
When he got off the bus and make his way to his door, he hoped Sam would be inside on the couch waiting for him. And just like he'd thought, Sam was no where in sight.

Colby locked the door, checking it a couple times as paranoia set in. He paced around the living room for a few moments before he noticed a piece of paper taped to the living room table.

As he got closer, the note appeared to be written in messy handwriting, and although it was messy, he could still tell that it was Sams.

The note read:
I love you, Colby. I'll be back.
