Cross-legged I sit on the bed looking at Rex, I had so many questions only seconds ago, now I'm drawing up a blank. Looking around me, the massive windows catch my eye. "Where am I?" I ask, figuring it's as good a place to start as any. Besides nothing else is jumping out at me. I whip my head back to Rex to find him staring out the same windows I was looking at.
"That's a simple question with a complicated answer. Right now, if you step out the front door, you'll end up on the outskirts of a small town in the Highlands. If you step out the back door... lets just say it's a different place." I'm pretty sure my expression would make a great WTH meme, not that Rex would know it, after he finished he finally looked away from the window to where his eyes are resting now, over my shoulder, staring at the bookcase. "What? What do you mean? How does the front door lead one place and the back door to another? Does this have something to do with what Alia said about Trystan calling her to find out where they were? I thought that was odd, I just assumed that maybe this place had moved..."I trailed off, realising how many absolutely bonkers things I've allowed to escape my notice. What the cheese crackers K? You're seriously falling off the deep end now.
"Yes, and this House kind of moved. In a manner of speaking. It has to do with the front door/back door situation which would be far better explained by anyone else, so maybe you want to ask me another question, please?" The look on his face is as pleading as a grownup's could be, but seeing as he was still staring over my shoulder and not looking at me, some of its effect was lost on me. Alas I still asked a different question, or rather a bunch of different questions, "How do you know Chris? Who were those people at my house? Are my parents okay? Were those people there when my parents got home? How does Chris know you? Is Ami okay? I swear on my to-read-pile that if they touched her they'll pay! Who the hell is Trystan? What the hell is Trystan? You know what, same for you! And Alia and Nevin, the cute bookworm. Can I keep Nevin? Who is Nevin's mom? Why is there a bunch of teens and preteens staying in her house? What prophecy were the boys talking about? Who is Allen? What is an inheritance? How do you know Sofia? How is Trystan Sofia's grandson? As far as I've known she doesn't have family. How did Trystan teleport? Am I crazy? I'm crazy, of course I'm crazy. This is probably just a fancy asylum for minors. My parents came home last night and I was hallucinating, so they booked me in here... No, that can't be it, that doesn't explain that weird episode Sofia had. Wait. I've got it. I knew it was too good to be true when Sofia let me see one of her collections. So I started hallucinating two days ago, my parents found me and then booked me into this asylum because they love me and didn't want me to hurt myself during an 'episode' or whatever it's called. Right? And all the kids and teens here suffer from some sort of mental disorder, right? And you and Nevin's mom are like our doctors or something and Alia is probably an intern or something. See, I'm not crazy anymore. Call my parents. I can go home now. Right?" I'm a bit out of breath as I finish, but the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Trystan and that Allen dude are probably interns as well, or more likely they're doing community service or something and Trystan has bad circulation in his hands and can run really fast, that's why I kept getting really cold when he touched me and thought he teleported us every time I opened eyes afterward. Yeah, that works. It totally makes sense now. Looking up I see that Rex has finally decided to look at me in stead of past me.
"Oh Kat, how I wish that was true. That this was all your imagination messing with you because of a temporary lapse in sanity. You'd be safer that way, but I'm afraid it all really happened. Though I'm not sure what you meant by Sofia's episode, but still I have no doubt that it, too, really happened. Your gua-parents will be here around noon, with Chris and Amicitia, who I assume is this Ami you asked about. Nevin's mother is a Psy-Human and she is the 'manager' of this House, for the lack of a better description. Alia and Allen are twins, Semigods. Trystan... Well he's a demigod and I am one of the Eight, as is Trystan's parents. Chris is not who you think he is. He's a First Order Protector sent to watch over you and report anything strange leading up to your 21st birthday in a few years, but I don't think that will be the case anymore. And as for Sofia... that's one woman who'll cut me for sharing what's hers to share. As it stands I might have told you more than I should have." He keeps his eyes on mine, completely open and earnest. Like he's willing me to believe him. His eyes are the exact colour as my own, light green with a whole lot of golden and brown specks surrounding his pupil. It's like staring into my own eyes, like I'm trying to convince myself of all this. That I'm not crazy.
I have to be crazy though, why else would I actually be believing him more and more the longer we look at each other. His eyes are bare making it ridiculously easy to read the emotions in them: worry, pain, loss, longing, kindness, a toughness, a tenderness and the type of love I thought only fathers had. "Well, ain't this fun. I think it would have been easier to wrap my head around being stuck inside an asylum for the rest of my life than this," I deadpan, causing Rex's eyes to light up with laughter before the barriers go up again.
"Now that we've established that you're not hallucinating," he says, standing up. "How about you come down for some breakfast? I hear there are KitKat pancakes on the menu."
"There are no such things. Sadly. If there were I'd have heard of them by now," I pout, thinking about the impossibility of such a slice of heaven. Rex chuckles, "I think that over the next few days you'll find that quite a few things you thought didn't exist, actually does." I roll my eyes at that. I don't want to find things like murderous dragons over the next few days, so hopefully it'll be minor, but ultimately awesome things like KitKat pancakes. I tell Rex I'll be down after I brush my teeth and hair, which will only happen after a nice, long, piping hot shower.
Hey people!
I know I'm being real inconsistent, I'm hoping to get back on track soon.
