Chapter 16:

Chapter 16:

            Shine and I glanced at each other. I gripped my bow and arrows tight. A roar pierced the air. I could feel my entire body pulse with the sound of it. I loaded an arrow and pointed my bow to the sound of the monster. Shine placed a dart into her dart gun and aimed it at the ferocious sound. We looked at each other one more time, then nodded. We began to move towards the noise.

With my bow aimed at the monster, I studied it. It was a bright green; the kind of green you find on poisonous frogs and it was huge. Its eyes were like a cat’s. And the teeth. They were at least seven inches long.

“It’s a demon,” Shine told me.

“What the hell is that?” I hissed.

“An ancient monster.”

The beast opened its jaw then snapped it shut. I gave an involuntary scream. I couldn’t even imagine its bite force. It crawled on its belly towards us. I released the arrow. It hit its scales and bounced off. Shine swore.

“We need a plan,” I said. Shine and I moved our backs so that they were touching. The thing began to circle us.

“Its eye,” I said, “is its weak spot. If we shoot it in the eye, it will go into its brain and kill it.”

“Do you want to do it?”

I nodded and gripped another arrow. I aimed it at the beast’s eye and let my arrow fly. With a cry that would penetrate my dreams for the rest of my life, the beast fell to the ground.

“Is it dead?” Shine asked.

“I think so.”

“I’ll check.” Shine’s voice trembled as she walked over to the monster.

She kicked it. The demon didn’t move. Shine nodded and started to move away. Then I saw the yellow eye open; saw the demon’s jaw open; saw the evil beast clamp it’s mouth around Shine’s legs. And all I could do was scream.

The blood was everywhere. Shine’s screams echoed through the night air as I loaded another arrow as fast as I could. I aimed at its eye again. But that only weakened it. I needed Shine’s poisonous dart gun.

I began to walked towards my ally. I crouched down beside her bloodied body and gently removed her dart gun.

“Be brave,” I told her. Her tears mixed with dirt and blood.

“Win this and go back to your family,” Shine said, as she closed her eyes.

I aimed at the monster that the Capitol created to make my life a living hell. The dart landed in the demon’s eye at the exact same moment Shine’s cannon sounded.
