16. Smile

We arrive on the scene and its a nightmare on earth. Three nomu are wreaking havoc on citizens.
I notice a particularly warm source of power. "Todoroki?"
He turns to me, "Yamada. Thank god you're here!"
"Crocus! Pay attention you dumb brat!" O'clock shouts at me as he is he's thrown into the side of a building by a Nomu.
I immediately run over, "O'clock!"
"Shut up and fight!" he screams as he gets up and charges the creature.
Suddenly my phone buzzes. Todoroki looks up at me, "Midoriya is in trouble!"
"Send heroes to this location as soon as possible!" I shout to Endeavor and grab onto Todoroki's arm as i teleport us to Midoriya's location.
My eyes widen at the sight before me. The pro hero Native is badly wounded. Iida is laying on the ground severely bloodied and injured. Midoriya is hardly standing. And then theres the real problem. The hero killer Stain standing over Iida's broken body.
He looks up at us, "you should run while you still can, fake heroes, before you get hurt."
I clench my fists, "you should take those words and shove them right up your ass."
He narrows his eyes at me, "well someone's got an attitude. Women shouldn't curse, its not attractive."
"Well neither am i, so fuck off." i hiss.
He suddenly lunges at me and i cross my arms infront of my self, "shield!"
He his flung back into the wall and staggers to a stand. "You're gonna regret that."
"Not nearly as much as you are." i glare at him. "Bubble shield." Dome-like projections of shields cover the three victims.
He tilts his head to the side as he tries to stab me, "interesting." Stain slashes me across the stomach, but i pull the sword out of his hands before he can lick it.
Todoroki attacks Stain with a flury of fire attacks. "You'll pay for your crimes!" he screams.
I stagger for a second before breaking the weapon with my bare hands.
"Don't let him ingest your blood!" Midoriya shouts out.
I briskly nod and kick the Hero killer's back sending him into the wall again. "Midoriya. I'm using your quirk."
He looks shocked but nods. "Do it."
"Todoroki, Iida." i say as Stain struggles to stand. "Lets finish him." we all unleash our powers onto the villain and i scream at the top of my lungs, "smash!!"
He falls to the ground defeated and unconscious.
I stand tall but as I'm about to say something, i feel a sharp pain in my back. I turn to see that a Nomu has grabbed onto Midoriya and i.
"Yamada!" he shouts as the creature has fixed its sharp beak into my shoulder blade.
I hiss through my teeth as i pull Midoriya away from the creature. I look up to see the Hero Killer jump into the air and i shout, "look out!"
Suddenly, the Nomu is knocked out of the sky. I toss Midoriya out of the way as the creature falls to the ground. Pinning me to the sidewalk.
My vision goes blurry and i feel unconsciousness wash over me as im vaguely aware of the hero killers voice.

:: Midoriya's POV: :

After Stain made a big speech, he ended up passing out. I turn towards the body of the Nomu and try not to scream. There pinned to the sidewalk is my classmate bleeding out.
"Yamada!" Iida shouts.
"Quiet kid." Endeavor scolds. "Shoto. Get ready to grab the girl."
The pro lifts the head of the creature up and Todoroki has to pull the beak out of her shoulder to get her out of there. "Yamada. Hang in there." he mumbles as he pulls her away.

Iida, Yamada, Todoroki and i were all admitted into a hospital. Turns out that we may all face permanent problems because of this. My arm may never work properly again.. Somehow i knew that might've happened. Iida's hand is is the same condition. Todoroki should be fine though. He didn't get hurt as bad as we did though.
Though we say nothing, i knew we were all worried about Yamada.
She was the one who protected us from further injuries. Yamada never once thought of her own well being out there. She was only interested in protecting us.
"Excuse me?" three people walk into the hospital room.
We glance at eachother before looking back the men. I wince as i see Gran Torino angrily glaring at me.
"My name is Kenji Tsuragamae. I'm the chief of police." he speaks calmly. "The three of you broke the law by using your quirks without a proper permit."
"What did you expect us to do, sir? We were faced with a crisis, and we are supposed to be heroes in training! Were we supposed to just turn a blind eye and ignore it?!" Todoroki shouts.
"Listen. At the time, only two people there were actually qualified. Native and the girl Yamada." the Chief states with narrowed eyes.
"Wait, what do you mean by that?" Iida asks.
"She's had a permit for over 2 years, but didn't have the proper training for heroism and was too young for real hero work. Thats not why why I'm here though." he crosses his arms, "listen. You won't have to pay for this misconduct. I'll pardon you three
done under the condition that you cannot publically be credited or recieve the glory and fame as the ones who defeated Stain, the credit will instead go to Endeavor."
I glance at Iida and Todoroki before we nod in silence.
"That's fine." Iida states. "Any word on Yamada's condition?"
"She's still undergoing surgery's at the moment, but the doctors say she'll be fine." he said. "For what it matters, we know the truth and we are greatful of your heroic service to society. Have a swift recovery." he says as they leave the room.
"That's bullshit." Todoroki curses. "Endeavor did nothing."
I sigh, "would you rather be behind bars for breaking the law?"
He hesitantly shakes his head, "..no."
The door opens again and a bed is wheeled in. My eyes widen as I see a familiar head of (h/c) hair beneath the white blankets. She stirs and rests a hand on her chest, "heal."
I resist the urge to gag as i hear her bones cracking back into place.
She sits up, "i'm glad that you're all okay. I was worried."
"Yamada!" Todoroki looks shocked, "you're okay!"
"Physically, yes. Mentally, arguable." she sighs, "how are you guys feeling?"
"Better now that we know that you're okay." i mumble. My phone buzzes on the table next to me. "Hello?"
"Midoriya, its Tsu. Are you alright? You sent out that location last night in Hosu and that's where the attack was." i hear an urgent voice.
"Tsu.. We're all alright over here. Thanks for your concern." i say calmly.
"Oh Midoriya! What's Yamada's hero name?" she asks.
"I'll ask." i look over to Yamada, "what's your hero name again?"
"Crocus the Symbol of Protection." she said with a serious face.
"Um, she said it was Crocus." i relay.
She's silent for a second, ".. What hospital are you at?"
"I'll send you a location, why?"
"You'll see." she said quietly as she hangs up.
"What was all that about?" Iida asks.
"Tsu said that she was coming here after asking about Yamada." i mumble.

:: Your POV ::

I sigh quietly. Something bad happened. The hero Manual told me that O'clock had died during the attack. I can't help but think it was my fault.. It was though. I had to choose between two people to save. I had to choose who to save. It was my fault.
"Yamada!"
I blink and look up to see Midoriya, "sorry...did you say something?"
His eye brows furrow together, "um.. You're crying. Is everything okay?"
I shrug and wipe away my tears with my fist. "I just received some troubling news."
The boys look at me concerned, "what happened..?" Iida asks quietly.
"The hero that i was interning for.. Died during the attack because i wasn't there to help him." i mumble.
The door opens amd Tsu walks in and throws her arms around me. "Thank you."
"I-i.. Well hello to you as well." i say shocked.
"What happened?" Todoroki asks.
"My little sister got lost yesterday. She was almost raped, but Yamada saved her and brought her back home." Tsu explains. "According to Satsuki, you were shot a hundred times. Is this true?"
"It was only 6.." i mumble. All eyes in the room are on me. "Um..what..?"
"You're already a hero. Its just.. Im envious of how brave you are." Iida whispers.
The other three nod in agreement.
"Froppy!" a male voice sounds out from outside. A man with a seal like face pokes his head inside.
"Captain Selkie! This is the girl that saved my sister." Tsu gestures to me.
He shakes my hand, "you're going to be a great hero! Wait.. Are you not alarmed by my appearance?"
I shake my head, "not at all. You're adorable Selkie, sir."
He covers his face, "see! I told you Sirius! People do think i'm cute!"
"Thats the anesthesia, sir!" a woman sounds out from the hallway.
Selkie pouts, but i try to brighten his mood. "It's not the anesthesia. That wore off hours ago. You're adorable, Captain Selkie sir. With all due respect though, we should be resting to do our best another day."
"Oh! Right!" he shouts. "Froppy just told us about what you did so the crew and i wanted to stop by and give you something." he hands me a bunch of balloons in various shades of blues and a plushy of himself.
Kinda self absorbed, but he means well. "Thank you very much."
They all leave and the boys laugh at me. "Did you really call him cute? He looked like he was going to kill you!" Midoriya chuckles.
"He was doing his best!" i say defensively.
Despite our lightened mood, i was still full of grief. I don't think I've ever felt anything like it before. Its like.. My heart hurts, but theres no physical injury. It hurts like hell.
That night, i held onto the plushy and cried myself to sleep thinking of how i inadvertently killed a pro hero by not helping him too. I can't help everyone.. I know this, but i can try. I exhale shakily as i fall asleep.
