The rest of my classes came and went and I sat down at my usual lunch table. Levi, just like yesterday, sat down to join me.
“Where were you third period?” he asked like it was any of his business.
“Not there, obviously,” I countered. He rolled his eyes.
“Come on, Darcy Elizabeth. I was being serious.”
“And so was I when I told you that my name was Elizabeth.”
“Oh, come on. It suits you. Dark, sexy, and a bit sarcastic. It's the perfect name for you.”
“Like I'm any of those things,” I replied, rolling my eyes.
“There's that sarcasm,” he said with a smile. “Seriously, where were you though?”
“One, it's none of your business and two, I was out with James.”
“Wait, wait, wait. The James? Like as in tall, dark and handsome James?”
“That's the one.”
“Damn am I jealous of you! What I wouldn't give to take a ride on that...” That's when it dawned on me.
“You're gay.”
“Hella gay.” I felt so stupid for not realizing it earlier.
“I should've guessed.”
“I hide it well. Mostly by hitting on girls such as yourself.”
“That makes me feel so much better about staying the night at your house.” I caught Finley's eye from across the lunch room and she winked at me, smirking undoubtedly at the fact that Levi was sitting with me.
“Yeah, but Jude's very much straight. Be wary of him. I think he likes you,” he admitted, grinning at me. I rolled my eyes.
“Is that why you live with Jude? Because you're...?” I trailed off, letting him fill in the blanks for me.
He smiled sadly. “Yes. I live with Jude because my parents kicked me out. Because I'm gay.” Then he paused and grabbed my arm. “Please, please don't tell anyone. I'll be your gay best friend, your shopping buddy, your fashionista, everything else gay guys are expected to be just so long as you. Don't. Tell. Anyone.”
“I promise.” And I meant it. I had absolutely no reason to tell anyone. Not that it was anyone's business anyway. It was hardly even mine. As much as I wanted to rub it in Finley's face that Levi definitely did not have any interest in my whatsoever, I knew that I would keep my word. If there was one thing I was good at, it was keeping my word.
Levi smiled at me. “I don't think you'll like James, honestly. I mean, I know you've talked to him, but I don't think you two have a lot in common. I mean he's dark and sexy, and you're dark and sexy, but you two are two very different kinds of dark and sexy.”
“What do you mean by that?” I asked. James caught my eye from the other side of the lunch room. I ducked my head and blushed. There was something so wrong about making eye contact with the same person that you were just talking about. It made me feel guilty.
“I mean that you are dark in a sarcastic, loner type of way. James is dark in that whole brooding, motorcycle, leather, sexy ass way,” Levi paused to pop a greasy looking fry into his mouth. “Two very different things.”
“Yeah? Well I,” I pushed myself away from the table and lifted my tray, “think you're crazy.”
“Oh, I know I am. But so are you.” I smiled, realizing that he was right. I felt less awkward about the entire Levi situation now that I had assurance that Levi had no interest in me. Which meant that all flirting he had done on me didn't mean anything.
