"A year, and I still don't understand why you fancy the pompous jackass." Duke snorted into his milkshake as his lips wrapped around the straw, slurping up the blended concoction heartily.
Kisara's lips hinted at a conspiratorial smile as she casually sipped from her own drink. They had been in this small cafe for close to three hours now, and they would have left earlier if it hadn't been for the guys constantly ordering food and pastries. The reason for their lengthened stay? A waitress they all deemed to be hot. Boys... And at some point, her relationship with the KC CEO came up. Why though? She hadn't a clue.
Joey was snickering as he scarfed down his third clubhouse sandwich in three huge bites. "I second Duke on that one. What's so special about Kaiba?"
Brushing a lock of hair behind her ear, she smiled at these teenaged boys she was fortunate enough to call her friends, even if they were judgmental towards her romantic relationship at times. "He just is."
Seto was misunderstood. They just didn't know him, and Kisara's boyfriend preferred it that way.
At that, Joey snorted, spurting milkshake from his nose.
"Gross!" Tristan bellowed, throwing a used paper towel at his blonde friend.
Joey ignored the jibe, wiping his nose free of milkshake speckled with snot residue. "Special asshole, you mean."
He always was the most vocal out of the three whenever it came to her relationship with Seto. Kisara had known and accepted that from the start. Even during the course of her and Seto's getting to know phase, the boys were not ashamed of their disdain, but Joey was the most fearless out of them, shoving his loathing in Kaiba's face at every opportunity. Seto returned his sentiments of course—at a fiercer degree than necessary.
"Does he treat you right?" Tristan asked curiously, concern for her written all over his face.
"I would never stay with him if it were otherwise." Kisara pointed out as she finished the last of her meal, glancing at the glass doors in turn, waiting for Seto to make his appearance.
He called her earlier, asking where she was because he was getting off of work in a couple of hours then and offered to pick her up. She promptly told him of course, and then he'd told her that he'd call again when he was leaving the office. An hour and a half later, and still no calls from her wayward man. Something must have come up.
"Why do you keep looking at your phone?" Duke pointed out curiously, noting how Kisara's eyes flickered to her phone every other minute.
"Expecting a call." She replied, pushing her share of the clubhouse sandwiches towards Joey. She couldn't take anymore of the stuff.
"Does he know where you are?" Joey's eyes narrowed, the gears in his brain turning at a rapid rate as he greedily munched on the sandwich Kisara had offered.
Kisara just shrugged, unperturbed at the blonde's suspicions. "He's picking me up after work. He said he'd call if he was leaving the HQ."
"But you've only been here for, what, three hours?!" Joey exclaimed through a mouthful of clubhouse sandwiches. Bits of scrambled egg flew every which way, and one landed close to her manicured hands.
Raising a skeptical eyebrow, she smirked at him before flicking the bit of food away. "Half the day, Joey."
Tristan soon joined in on the fray and the back-and-forth banter between their girl, and their loud blonde friend. Duke watched the three interact closely up until Kisara's man of the hour showed up, appearing out of nowhere behind Kisara. Joey's outrageous energy and attention shifted to the newcomer instantly as Kaiba was bombarded with all sorts of ridiculous questions and statements while Tristan did his best to hold the aggravated blonde back. The company owner's response was expected—just a level-headed demeanor and a few eloquent comebacks that only served to irritate Joey even more.
It was a hilarious display, Duke had to admit, but it could get tiring sometimes—especially with how often Joey ragged on the guy for no other reason than he wanted to. Kaiba's participation in Duel Monsters tournaments were different, and definitely warranted a bit of heckling because that sort of thing was natural in competitions. But whenever it came to their girl friend's relationship with the guy, sometimes it just went too far.
Kisara was giggling behind her hand at Joey's antics and Tristan's attempt at restraint before standing up and grabbing her backpack.
"I'll see you boys on Monday."
She winked at them and went along to join Kaiba who already had his back turned to the group.
Tristan was frowning. "He didn't even wait for her." He shook his head. "Just started walking."
Joey chuckled, rolling his eyes. "That's money bags for ya."
Duke agreed. It did seem a little insensitive of Kaiba, but Kisara didn't seem to mind. Granted, with how much time she spent with the guy, maybe she was used to his behavior more than she let on. She never really spoke about the details of it to them so much. Because, frankly speaking, he and the other guys in their group didn't really care, but if there was one person who probably knew more about Kisara's current relationship, it was Tea.
Duke made a mental note to ask the brunette if he ever so happened to swing by Yugi's game shop.
But while nobody could really truly fathom why Kisara put up with Kaiba, or why Kaiba himself suddenly entered a relationship, one thing was for sure: Kisara did seem happier. The entire group was skeptical about this development, to be honest. Nobody liked the idea of their friend entering a relationship that had so much potential to break her lovely heart, but looking at them now, and just seeing how Kaiba intertwined his fingers with Kisara's and how natural it seemed for him to kiss the top of her head affectionately—and in public too, Duke figured maybe they should give the couple the benefit of the doubt. Who had a right to judge, after all?
