A few days later and everything was back to normal.
Well, they tried to believe it was. Peter kept his dark thoughts to himself while Wade pretended not to notice. Steve watched over them closely, thinking that Peter hadn't noticed. Of course he had though, and he was getting tired of it.
"Pop, I'm fine." Peter said over dinner one night, pushing his mac and cheese around his plate.
"I never said you weren't, Pete."
Ever since Peter was able to walk around without getting dizzy again, Steve had watched over him almost as if he thought his son would try to throw himself out a window. He walked on eggshells anytime he would talk. It was tiring for the both of them.
"I'm not going to do it again. I'm fine." Peter didn't look up from his plate as he said this, startling his father. They had been avoiding the topic completely, both aware it was bound to happen eventually.
Steve let out a soft, nervous chuckle. "I just worry about you." He rubbed his face, his calm facade breaking. "I can't loose you too."
He didn't say it, but Peter knew what he meant. The past three days at the tower were quiet. No one daring to say a word. Not even Tony, who was lucky to keep a thought to himself. Now, he wouldn't even speak to either of them, avoiding them completely.
This, among many other things Tony has done, drove him to a drastic decision, moving. More specifically, moving him and Peter away from Tony.
Steve brought this up to Tony after four days of not speaking to him. Tony was, of course, in his lab working on something to add to his suit. Steve had noticed that his projects weren't as complicated as they used to be. "Tony." He turned Tony's chair to face him. "Peter and I are leaving... for good."
Steve didn't know what he expected, but it wasn't what he received. "Don't call me wanting any money." And with that, Tony went back to working on an upgrade.
Steve was in Peter's room not even a minute later. "Peter, start packing. We're leaving as soon as we can."
Peter looked up from his book, confusion clear on his face. "What do you mean? What's going on?"
Steve sighed. "We're moving, Pete. Your father isn't coming."
Peter sat there for a moment before laughing humorlessly. "Where are we going to go?"
Steve smiled slightly. "I found an apartment twenty minutes from here. I'm going to go a bit under the radar so I've already gotten a job at a small coffee shop a few minutes away. You'll still be able to go to the same school."
Peter was ecstatic. As soon as Steve left his room, he called Wade to tell him the good news. Wade was, of course, extremely relieved that Peter wouldn't be in the same house as Tony any more.
