Adelaide

She stayed her heart
Knew it to be true
He had left, torn it apart
Pulled and pried in two

He had closed his eyes
Not wanting to see
What damage he had done in his lies
And his love he left to be

She picked up her pieces
And wore a new dress
leaving the rain soaked clothes with creases
and covered her heart that looked a mess

he smiled and laughed
Like nothing was wrong
But when he was alone
He sang a broken hearted song

Adelaide I knew you were mine
The sparkle in your hazel eyes and cheeks flushed bright
I left you in the cool autumn at midnight
I miss you and want you back darling divine

She saw him around
And felt herself crush inside
Her heart broken but bound
And she held it together
Knowing all he had said he had lied

My love you left me at dawn
I saw your blue eyes look beyond
And I knew our future together was gone
When you gave me a rose
And kissed me in the early morning rain
I ignorantly pushed aside the constant pain
I never want to see you
Leave me alone

He saw her change and look different
The days passing by
His smile still forced as he went
Not knowing alone too she did cry

Darling Adelaide I love you enough
To give you away
Your father didn't approve of my heart
I thought he was right
That's why I left you that night
You consume my thoughts every moment
And I can only hope you remember my face
More than just a flicker in the dark
Or a rose left in the gardens we first met
Oh, my love
I left you so you could be happy

She met someone years later
who cherished her
And smiled at her like no one could
Adelaide loved him with almost all her heart
But at dawn she would wake
Opening a book
To hold a rose pressed in between the pages
