Jake holds me as I shake and cry. God...I must look like an absolute trainwreck. His touch sends shivers down my arms. But his hands are so warm.
"It's o.k. Lexi...and least you're here. At least you're safe." he whispers.
I start to calm down a bit. Then I realize that he's crying too. But I don't know what to do...
"Thanks..." I say shakily.
He nods.
It's night time and the zombies are still coming through.
The little girl is growing tired.
"What's your name kid?" I ask her.
"Mary..." she says and drifts off to sleep.
Mary...
"Lexi...the herd...it's starting to thin." Jake says. I look and see he's right. There are less and less coming in. Finally they're all gone. But I didn't see because I fell asleep on Jake's shoulder.
I wake up to the sound of screaming and yelling.
"YOU LIED TO US!"
"I LOST MY DAUGHTER BECAUSE OF YOU!"
"HOW DARE YOU!"
They're all screaming. What a wonderful way to get up.
"I'll go down." I sigh. But whimper at what is left of my mom.
When I'm in front of them, I try to hold back tears, but they fall anyway. I imagine my mom comforting me and wiping them away. She would know what to do. But, she's dead now, and I can't stop that. I wipe away my own tears and comfort myself.
"SPEAK FOR YOURSELF!"
"DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'VE DONE?"
"THEY CAN CLIMB!"
"THEY CAN FUCKING CLIMB!"
"CALM DOWN! PLEASE! I KNOW! O.K? I fucking know." I say and everyone shuts up.
I look behind me.
"What's back there?" one starts.
"TELL US!" they all say. I start to cry again.
"Mom..." I whimper.
"What?" they say. All of a sudden a gunshot rings out. By the time all of this happened Jake and Mary got down. My friends ran to me to comfort me and by the end everyone screamed at the noise.
"Shut the hell up and leave the damned child alone! She came up with a plan and it's much better than anyone of you came up with. AND THIS IS HIW YOU FUCKING THANK HER?" says a gruff voice and he shoots the air again. I know that voice...could it be...?
"Dad?"
