Kenji swam until he reached the ship he had searched for, and peeked his head out of the water. He started to wave until someone took notice and started the process to haul him onboard. Soon, he found himself thrown in a water tank in a room that smelt of blood, sweat, and tears.
As he was waiting for an audience with the captain, Kenji noticed a human.. Was that a human? He smelt slightly of siren.. The human was laid against the opposite wall and seemed to be passed out. "Are you awake?" Kenji called out hesitantly. This human had cuts, bruises, and— was that a name carved into his bloody skin?
The human slightly opened up his eyes. He instantly tried to stand, but fell with a thud, and Kenji winced at the sickening sounds the human's body made when it crashed. "Did he.."
Kenji leaned forward a bit to hear the human better. "What was that?"
"Did he c-capture you, too?"
Oh.
Suddenly, this made so much sense. Kenji was gonna die, like this human. He was a complete and utter idiot to trust Ushijima Wakatoshi. "No. I made a deal with him. I'm guessing that he's just gonna kill me after the deal's done. Anyways, what did he do to you? Those look like some nasty wounds."
"Yeah.." The human mumbled something else, but then closed his eyes.
"Hey now, don't die on me! Keep your eyes open!" Kenji felt panic bubble up. He barely knew him, but the human was the only person to talk to right now and he was gonna die. Then, he heard the door creak open, and Kenji tensed up. It was a redhead.. The second in command! (Kenji didn't know the positions on ships)
The guy walked in and glanced around the room before speaking. "You're that shark guy that Captain made a deal with, right?" Kenji didn't answer. "I'm Tendou Satori, and that's Yahaba Shigeru."
"Kenji. You bastards used me, didn't you?" The shark growled. "You think you can get away with this?! The others will find out and they will—" Kenji's voice faltered. He didn't have anyone who would care for him.
"Hey," Moniwa greeted, waving as he swam over. Aone was with him.
Tendou sighed. "Yeah, and I'm sorry about that. The captain has a tendency to do that. I could always help you, you know?"
Aone fumbled with his words after Kenji spoke about rebelling. "I can always— uh, help you."
"Like I want help from someone as sick as you," Kenji snarled, his voice as sharp as a knife. It cut into Tendou and he flinched. "You deserve to die."
"I guess I could help, too." Moniwa laughed. "Let's go grab something to eat."
Tendou opened his mouth to speak, but closed it upon realizing that someone else had strolled in. The someone walked over to Kenji's water tank and gazed at him. "Ushijima, how nice it is to see your ugly face," the shark spat, but the captain ignored him and turned his attention on the human.
"He's such a beauty, isn't he? With my name carved into his skin." Ushijima didn't seem to be speaking to anyone, but he continued on. His eyes, and his general attitude seemed to shift from stoic to lust. Ushijima leaned down to caress the human's face. "It's not hard to imagine why sharks like you eat beauties like my dear Shigeru."
Ushijima had his back turned to the shark, and Tendou seemed to be trying to inch towards the door because he was uncomfortable. Kenji had to save this human. He was gonna die, so might as well die a hero to right his wrongs. With one mighty push, Kenji tipped his tank over and was swept over to Yahaba. The shark pulled him away, pushed Yahaba behind his back and tried to get as far away as he could. "I'd have to say that I don't eat beauties. I eat people like you for dinner."
Ushijima's mood changed again. "How unfortunate for you. I was even thinking of sparing your pathetic life. Tendou, get me my sword."
"Uhh, Captain, are you sure this is a good idea?" Tendou objected immediately, but Ushijima wouldn't let him rebel.
"Now, Tendou. I don't have all day to be in the presence of this waste of space."
Tendou quickly left. Breathing started to get difficult for Kenji, but he continued to be strong. "What are you gonna do? Cut off my head?"
"Yeah," Ushijima answered bluntly.
"You don't have the guts." Dread began to bubble up along with panic in Kenji's chest. He knew that this was coming, but why was it so difficult? The shark quickly turned to Yahaba who had his eyes wide open. "Listen, I don't have much time. You better get off this ship and live how you want, and don't let anyone, anyone, tell you what to do. I may not have known you very long, but.."
The door opened, and in came his impending doom. "Stay strong or I swear to the holy gods that I'll come back and haunt you, got it?!" Kenji closed his eyes, turning his head back to the general direction of Ushijima and Tendou. Silence fell upon the air, and Kenji never felt so close to death like this. He could feel the gods open their arms and smile, welcoming him.
The sword quickly cut through the air and the shark felt a sharp pain through his neck for a few moments before succumbing to darkness. "Welcome." Kenji could hear a god whisper to him gently. Then, an embrace. "Let's go."
"Who are you?"
"Me? Oh, um, I'm Teru. My friends Kawa and Ku are waiting for you. You barely made it in my faction, ahaha.." The darkness seemed to stretch of forever, and the silence that followed every pause in the conversation almost made Kenji go insane. "Erm, Kenji Futakuchi, right?"
Kenji nodded, and wondered how the god was guiding him without being visible. "Where are you?" He couldn't help ask questions, the former shark was in the presence of one of the three gods, after all. "I didn't know the gods were real. Are you guys the major gods like we think you are or..?"
"I don't know how to a-answer your questions." They laughed awkwardly again. "Look, there they are."
"I can't see them," Kenji stated bluntly. "Are you messing with me?" Two voices suddenly emerged, like they were there with them all along. They laughed boisterously, and it annoyed Kenji. "So I was right? You are messing with me?!"
"Nah dude, we're real and we-" Kawa, how did he know their name?, coughed to muffle a laugh and continued on. "We're not messing with you, I swear. Ku, tell 'em."
Ku let a few more chuckles escape their lips before answering. "I wouldn't be able to. We're the.. uh, how do I put it? The mortals nicknamed us the bad gods so Kenji has reason to be suspicious."
"Yeah, I guess you're right." The two bickered for a bit before Teru stepped in. So if they're the bad gods, then is Teru the good one? Or is it switched? Teru, this is all so confusing— Fuck.
"It's about time that we get him to his faction." Kenji started to be guided away, and he heard Ku call after him before the silence completely consumed him.
"Don't worry, you'll get used to being dead!"
