Orphans     Chapter 4

Holy Fudge!!! Simon Cowell wants us on a label…  Wait are we being punked?? I can’t sing!! I also don’t ever remember sending in a recording or recording ourselves in general…

“You surely can sing Miss. Um Courtney, no you are not being punked and somebody by the name of Marcy sent this in.”

Woops, I didn’t mean to say that out loud.   Marcy?

“Mr. Cow-“he interrupts me

“Please call me Simon.”

“Simon there is not one girl in this orphanage by the name of Marcy, you must be mistaken.” Jenna says, I’m still quite embarrassed by the fact he say me hit the witch. I mean how you would feel if a huge prouder basically watched you take somebody down in three hits! Don’t get me wrong I’m very proud of myself for that, but that’s the kind of thing you want to keep behind closed doors.

“No it’s definitely you two, it was recorded off a camera, but are you sure there’s no girl with the name of Marcy?”

Before Jenna can reply I ask,

“Can I see the letter?”

“Of course,” he says handing it to me.

I look over the letter and immediately recognize the handwriting.  Melissa.  She helps the witch out with bills a lot so her penmanship is very nice, actually nice would be understatement. Teachers would beg to have a student with her intellect and hand writing, it is the most beautiful and legible script I’ve ever seen. Thinking back to our conversation with her, always tells us we should try out for some contest because we “so amazing and in sync with each other.”  We always just brushed it off with a thank you. I never thought she’d be crazy enough to record us and send it off to some hot shot producer! I’m surprised he even got the letter; don’t they have secretaries that go through all their mail anyway? Why would a secretary give this to him? I snap out of my thoughts by Simon uncomfortably clearing his throat.

“Melissa,” I state aloud.

Jenna instantly understands.

“I’m sorry for wasting your time Mr- Simon, but we didn’t mean to have this sent in…” I trail off. Why would he want me on label? Jenna is understandable she’s beautiful, talented, kind and sane. I’m basically her exact opposite.

“That’s alright I still want you two on the label” He says, I see the nervousness in his eyes and it’s not out of fear of us saying ‘no’, there’s something else.

“What else?” Jenna questions, catching on. Why does there always have to be an, if, or, but or something else with business man, couldn’t they just be straight forward? Wow I sound like an idiot in my own head right now.

“Is there a place we could sit and talk this out?” He asks taking a disturbed glance down at the witch who is still unconscious. I could tell her being unconscious on the floor is making him uncomfortable, maybe we should make him squirm some so he tells us the whole truth. But the look Jenna gives me tells me that we shouldn’t, why is she always a goody two shoes about things?

With a nod and a sigh, Jenna and I lead him into the ‘living’ room.
