"Alrighty then, guys. You seven have been chosen to beam down to the plant to collect samples of an extremely rare flower with many possible uses in the field of medicine." Kirk said, while Eli, Max, three science officers and two security officers readied themselves to beam down to the surface.
"However," He continued. "The natives are extremely hostile and very territorial over this particular plant. You will need to avoid them as best you can, if you would like to remain unscathed."
"Uh, Captain?" Eli asked.
"Yes, Miss Xavier?"
"If it's so dangerous, why do we have more scientists, i.e. people who don't know the butt of a phaser from the trigger, than security officers?"
"Uh... good question. That's because that's all Mister Spock said he needed." Kirk replied.
"Sure..." Eli mumbled. "Looks like I'm actually going to be needed after all." She muttered quietly, causing the woman beside her to chuckle slightly.
"The name's Woods. Irene Woods." The woman said, extending a tanned hand for Eli to shake. She had dark hair and even darker eyes and a warm, fruity accent when she spoke. Her face was lit up with a friendly smile and there seemed to be a permanent curious twinkle in her eyes, giving her the appearance of a child who just found a new hiding spot.
"A pleasure, Woods, Irene Woods." Eli joked. "Eli Xavier." She shook Irene's hand and grinned.
"You ever been on one of these before?" Irene asked.
"No, I'm kinda nervous, actually." Eli replied, looking a tad bit sheepish.
"Don't worry about it. It'll be a piece of cake." Irene smiled, placing her hands carefully behind her back. "We'll be in and out with the samples in no time."
Suddenly, someone called out, "energise!" and the transporters lit up, beaming the party down to the planet's surface.
They arrived in a deep, eerie-looking jungle. The ground was waterlogged and marshy, covered with purple and brown toned leaves. The light that filtered through the thick canopy above them was a deep blood-red and it cast oddly shaped shadows against the tree trunks.
The trees must've been at least a hundred metres tall, their thinnest branches being as wide as a man is long. Dense foliage surrounded the base of each tree, as if the plants were sucking out its very life force. The trees were evenly spaced and connected by what appeared to be a large number of vines twisted together.
"Wow!" Irene exclaimed. "Just look at this place!"
"I am indeed looking at it, Miss Woods." Stated a Vulcan male with a stoic expression. "There appears to be a similar distance between each tree, suggesting that this jungle is artificially created." He deduced with ease. "One can therefore infer that these trees have a purpose which, when one factors in that the ground is marsh-like, could be that the natives inhabit the canopy as opposed to dwellings on the ground. This would therefore explain the vines connecting the trees."
