I sighed angrily as I turned off my alarm. It was my 'get your ass up and go jogging' ring tone and it was absolutely annoying.
I dressed and got in my car, driving to the trails in the woods meant for joggers. I gave myself the usual pep talk that I did every time, except I had to remind myself that he didn't know what he was talking about and nobody was going to kidnap me. Why would they? I'm just a normal black girl from Virginia. There was absolutely nothing special about me.
I laughed to myself and grabbed one of my water bottles, my keys, and the dagger he asked me to always carry. When I told him it was pointless to have it, he said 'humor me and just take it'. It was a beautiful dagger, I'll admit and it even had his initials on it but I still felt it pointless to carry. I slipped it into the sheath and inside the waistband of my stretch pants so it was invisible to a person that doesn't know what they're looking for and plugged in my earbuds before I started jogging.
My usual jog was five and a half miles but I needed to jog further since I'd missed a few days and that man had me eating a lot of fattening foods.
I hummed along to the song that was playing, not paying any mind to my surroundings until I saw something flash in the trees. It was there and then it wasn't. I slowed my racing heart but picked up my speed knowing there was a ranger station not far from here and relaxed a little.
I screamed as I was tackled to the ground by a face I couldn't see.
"Shh, scream again and I'll make you regret it," the hooded man spoke as he put his cold hand over my mouth. I knew instantly what he was, it was like I could sense it and also knew, he was right and there was someone out to kidnap me.
The man dragged me up from the ground and I noticed a black Sedan and a matching van that I hadn't seen before with a bunch more men standing in front of it, masks on their faces. I waited until we were right in front of the van to attack.
I went for the one who'd jumped on me first, snatching off his mask to see his ugly face. I committed it to memory before elbowing him in the face and using the heel of my hand to smash his nose into his skull, hopefully killing him. When he went down, the closest one to me attacked. I roundhouse kicked him in the ribs, hearing a few cracks as he hit the Sedan leaving a deep dent from the impact of his hard body.
"Get her!" The obvious leader of the group shouted as I began to run. One of them zoomed in front of me, causing me to pause, giving the other one the chance to catch me. His thickly muscled arms wrapped around my torso, his face near my ear. "Where you going, princess?" He spoke with a chuckle, his smelly breath tickling my nose.
"Away from you," I spoke through clenched teeth before slipping the dagger from my hiding spot and slicing both of his arms with it. I turned as he screamed, seeing his skin smoking and sizzling as black stuff began forming and bubbling.
Not thinking of the one behind me gave him time to inject me, whatever it was taking effect instantly. My vision blurred and my limbs grew heavy.
"What did you inject me with?" I asked the assailant as I held my dagger against his throat.
He looked at me with fear in his eyes as he chuckled. "You're still as fierce as you use to be, Khimyah."
"Who are you? Why do you know my name?" When he didn't answer, I pushed the blade harder against his neck, making it burn him slightly.
He screamed before answering. "You will know soon enough, if my master doesn't kill you first."
I slit his throat, watching as he fell to the ground and his body turned an ugly grey color as the life left his eyes, black goo oozing from his wound.
