Gar was not considered incredibly intelligent. However, his senses were sharp, and his ability to perceive and form an analysis based on what he saw was inarguably impressive.

When he first saw the girl, the quiet, suppressed air around her allured him. As she moved, he saw the bulges in her worn shirt where her ribs were

protruding. Evidently, she was either malnourished, or really skinny. Naturally, he was curious to find out more about her.

So, "naturally," he totally botched his first meeting with her.

Gar didn't possess the common sense to think about the fact that appearing out of nowhere would probably startle the girl, so the first look she gave him was that of a negative manner.

Nice going, Gar.

He went with the best option (or at least the first one that happened to surface in the jumble of thoughts occupying his head) and asked for directions. Hey, you crash a car, you ask for directions. You startle an attractive girl and ruin possible future relations, you ask for directions.

Despite the icy look that the girl had previously given him with those dark eyes (which he couldn't figure out what color they were), she answered his question in a raspy note of a voice.

Stupid action number 1,000,000:

Gar didn't even thank her. Instead, he gave her his name. She didn't even notice the absence of outspoken gratitude; if she did, it wasn't apparent on her face.

Girls with excellent poker faces should be feared, Gar decided with absolute certainty.

She scrutinized him, and he found himself fighting with the irresistible urge to shrink under her intense gaze. He tried to imagine the same dark eyes in the midst of laughter, but this picture was impossible to see for two vital reasons: he still couldn't decide what color her eyes were, and there was a seemingly solid sadness in those dark circles of unnameable color that couldn't give way to joy.

She probably thinks I'm a scrawny idiot, Gar mentally whined with a mental sigh.

Then, she said something that Gar deciphered was probably not normal for her.

With a new emotion bubbling to surface in her eyes, she wished him luck.
