AU: Vampires

The sweet smell of blood entered Akashi's nostrils as he sniffed a pleasant scent that nearly drove him insane. On his first day at his 415th school he was suffering a terrible urge to drink blood and he knew the source. Standing next to him with no idea of the pain he was going through was his friend and the basketball's manager Kuroko whom was as beautiful as she smelled. If he had not mastered the art of self control all those many years ago Kuroko would have ended up in his bed drained and lifeless.

No, Akashi would never kill a person. If he really needed blood he would take a few sips to last him the next ten thousand years but for the first time in his life he was at a loss. This girl who never seemed to care about anything besides basketball and vanilla milkshakes had him by the finger. Yes, this girl whom Akashi started caring about and thinking more about than just her beauty and sweet smell. She was a beauty he thought was unattainable by human standards but of course, fate proved him wrong.

Her sweet scent tempted him frequently and during practice he found himself blindly staring at her and two seconds away from drooling. Midorima - his vampire friend who knew of his obsession; warned him that lusting after a human was dangerous but Akashi couldn't really find the energy nor the heart to care. He wouldn't drain Kuroko of her delicious blood, rather, while foreign; he felt more than hunger towards her.

Akashi was sure he loved her.

He was no fool to his own emotions, while he found her blood mouth watering; he was also aware of the emotions he was not meant to possess. He wanted to be her lover and for her to be his - but he held back. Because he was sure that being a vampire came with limitations. Humans were frightened of them and society did not accept his existence to blend in with humans naturally, so of course the bottom line was that he didn't want to scare off his first and only love.

"Aka-chin, maybe if you tasted her blood once you might stop thinking about her as a mate~?" Murasakibara chimed in but Akashi shook his head. Even if he found her blood to be disgusting (which he was confident was not) he would still be in love with her. The feelings she gave him with every conversation and every look changed him in ways he was not aware was possible.

"Good morning Akashi-kun! You're here early today."

Akashi smiled at the sight of a blue angel coming out to greet him. "It seems you beat me again, Tetsuna."

Kuroko softly giggled. "I can't beat you in exams but it seems I can wake up earlier than you."

How cute she was. How adorable she was. How beautiful she was. How funny she was. How perfect she was. Akashi has seen vampires and humans alike that were defined as 'beautiful' but none compared to Kuroko. He was sure that if he were human he would have confessed to her already.

Akashi smiled sadly at the thought. Why was he not human? He was born a vampire and thought it was a privilege to live for eternity and live as a superior being but now he had changed his mind. If he were human then he would not frighten Kuroko and they would already be dating. He would have a normal life span that he can share with her.

There was always the option to turn his beloved into a vampire and spend eternity with her but unlike Akashi, Midorima and Mursakibara who were all pure bloods, Kuroko would be a human-turned vampire and most of them ended up losing their sanity to the curse known as blood. Many pure vampires chose human lovers which ended that way - Midorima was a common example with his lover Takiko who is now isolated, only to be seen or fed by Midorima.

There were only a few success stories with Mursakibara and Tatsuya who actually survived the process and hardly needs to drink blood. It really was fate that decided this. Akashi would never take that kind of risk with Kuroko. He couldn't bear to be the reason why she loses her humanity.
