I woke up in a bed that wasn't mine, beside a girl that now was.

Cat was breathing softly, deep in sleep, her dark lashes brushing her cheeks. I pulled the covers further up her body and she stirred, murmuring my name tiredly, and nestled herself further in the pillows. I smiled, tracing my fingers across her face and planted a soft kiss on her forehead, before getting up and traipsing through to the kitchen to make breakfast with whatever she had.

I decided that just making a bacon sandwich would be suffice for now, we could eat it on the deck, and was busy searching for her frying pan- making a helluva lot of noise- when I felt soft patterns being drawn on my back with fingertips. I straightened up and looked down at Cat. Her blonde hair was tangled from sleep and the events of last night and she rubbed her eyes, yawning.

"I don't remember drinking last night," she said as she covered her mouth with one of her hands.

"That's because we didn't," I said, reaching down and picking up the frying pan that had so conveniently slipped to my feet from the cupboard. I kicked the door shut with my foot and turned around to start hunting for the oil, not without seeing Cat furrow her brows in confusion.

"But, we... We did do that. Didn't we?" she asked. I nodded as I searched. "I... What?"

"Yes, we did have sex. If that's what you're saying," I said as I found the bottle and poured a little oil into the pan. I heard Cat groan and I turned around, capping the bottle and sitting it down as I leaned back against the worktop, folding my arms.

"Something wrong with that?" I asked. The confusion had gone from her expression and was replaced with a mix of shock and pain? as she ran her fingers through her hair.

"No, no..." her voice was quiet, broken. "So you know I'm not a virgin?"

I smirked. "I didn't but I found out eventually," I answered. "Is that what you're worried about?"

She shook her head and came over to lean her head against my chest. I rested my chin on her forehead and wrapped my arms around her. "Remember when I said I'd only ever said 'I love you' to two people? You and someone else?" she asked.

"Mmhmm," I hummed.

"Well, I've also only ever done it with two people as well," she admitted, "you and the same person I said I loved."

"How about I make this, we'll go sit, and you can tell me about what happened?" I suggested. Ccat nodded and left silently. I could make out her silhouette against the sunlight as she leaned against the banister on the deck, staring out to sea. I turned back to the pan, turned on the hob and continued with the process of cooking bacon.

When I went outside, carrying two plates, Cat was sitting down at the outside table- staring down at her hands in deep thought. There were tears in her eyes, as if whatever she was thinking about was painful to reminisce.

"Hey," I said softly, setting the plates down and dragging a chair round to her side. She looked up, her cheeks wet with tear tracks. I reached out to brush her hair out of her face and wipe a tear away as it fell. She smiled weakly and leaned into my hand.

"So I guess you want an explanation?" she asked, pulling her plate over.

"An explanation would be nice, yeah," I said, copying her action. She stared down at the food on her plate for a moment and sighed heavily.

"I had this guy friend, a best guy friend. We did everything together. We were friends since we were kids, since before we started school. I loved him all that time, even when I wasn't entirely sure what love meant. We grew up and as we grew up... We grew apart. And for a while, in the mess of us both settling into our separate high schools, her friendship dissolved to that as just casual- not a best friendship anymore. And then I saw him again, when I went to visit my gran, and I felt a love for him that I knew wasn't like a sibling thing, like he was a brother to me. It was more," she paused to take a breath. "And then one night, when I was like 18 or 19, I had a party for New Year- it was my last New Year in Scotland, so it was a big party and I invited all my friends. My guy friend was there, and only a few of my close friends were invited to stay overnight. We got pretty wasted... And... Well, I woke up the next morning in bed with him and I knew we'd done it."
