Chapter Three
We all follow silently, obviously still curious. We slowly go down a staircase that I must have missed earlier.
When we get to the bottom, I see a small bus. But this bus has a long wire along the top of it, connecting to the top of the bus. I wonder what that is for. Power probably.
The boy speaks again; "My name is Adam. I am one of the Ambassadors. I will oversee your Judgment month. These next few weeks are for your benefit. It is also your chance to prove yourself to me and the other Ambassadors. The Choosing will take place at the end of the month."
Adam gestures to the small bus, " This is the Shuttle. She's your new best friend. Much easier than walking around. We will wake up at seven every morning, breakfast is seven thirty to eight. Then you will report to the front office, and be given a paper that will tell you what you will be doing all week and where to go. You will then get on the Shuttle, and it will take you to your station. We will take a break for lunch at twelve, finishing at twelve thirty. We will then finish at six, free time is from then to nine, witch is lights out. ", he finishes.
Free time? I've never had time that I could do whatever with. It's usually wake up, work, sleep. I guess that now that we are all at the Academy we are suppose to discover ourselves, and work really hard to perfect our abilities. I suppose that rule no longer applies for us.
We then all get on the shuttle. Eve and I taking a seat towards the back. Adam returns to explaining, "The first phase will be academic. Testing, and what not. Then, for phase two, we'll be focusing more on physical ability. Sports, mountain climbing, kardeo, and a bunch of other stuff. The last phase is my personal favorite. The last phase will be filled with stuff like art, drama, band etc. Each phase will be weighed the same on your score. We will then determine who is Chosen, and who is not. Now, since there are twenty-six of you, six will not be Chosen."
The room suddenly fills with soft whispers, as everyone looks at one another. The Shuttle slowly comes to a stop. Only six of us won't be Chosen. I just have to make it in the top twenty, and when I'm honest with myself, that doesn't sound so bad. The odds are better than I thought. Once we all had cilmbed out of the Suttle, Adam leads us into a small, red brick building.
" These are the girls dorms. You'll sleep here tonight, and then I can give you all a tour of the Academy. Come on, your dorm is right over here." he says, his voice now distant.
After Eve and I choose a bunk and get ready for bed, we talk.
" Wait, so you have how many brothers?" I ask.
" Four, and then me. I'm the second oldest, Austin is oldest. But enough about me, tell me your life." she prompts
" Well... I have my dad, he's a doctor. Yeah. Oh, and then there's Lucy. She's fifteen, and stuff." I finish. We sit in silence, staring up at the ceiling. I look over at the clock; it's eleven. It's not typically late for me, but I figure I'm getting up early, so I decide to go to sleep.
" Night, Eve," I say.
" Night, " she says back. I eventually find sleep.
*******
I awake to Eve shaking me, and bright lights.
" Come on, we're gonna be late." Eve said.
" I'm coming," I say yawning. We get ready in a hurry, then meet the others outside. I see Adam at the front, cramming everyone onto the Shuttle.
" We are going to go in the order of the phases. So academic buildings first, art class last," he says. We ride the Shuttle for a few minuets, and then come to a stop.
" This is the math room," says Adam; " You'll be in here for about two days. The first will be spent teaching you. The second will be testing. It will also be like this for science and history. Not all of you will come here tomorrow. Some will go to the other subjects first, for the sake of time." he finishes.
Eve and I look at each other. " Now if you would all get back into the Shuttle, we can continue the tour," he says.
As we all push to get in, someone pushes me to get inside; only to be pulled up at the last minuet buy a girl. " Thanks," I say.
" No problem, Jake is a jerk anyway. He's been my neighbor for most of my life, and he still hasn't changed. Oh, I'm Heather, by the way. " she says
" I'm Ember ," I say. I now realize that Eve must be on the Shuttle already. I look at Heather, long golden hair, a freckle covered nose that curves at the top, hazily brown eyes. Pretty.
As I walk in I see Eve, sitting next to her. We visit the rest of the academic buildings in a grey blur, all simply classrooms. Then we get started on the phase two areas. All the sports fields look the same two; large stretches of grass with meaningless lines all over them. The phase three where a little different from the academic, instruments and theaters instead of computers and pencils.
After we finish, I collapse onto the bottom bunk, clustered with all of this new information. Academic, physical, creativity; all in one month? As I get up to brush my teeth, I see Heather.
" Hey, Ember, is it?" she asks
" yeah, yeah it is. Well it was sure nice to see you again Heather." I say deciding I'm too tired for a conversation.
Just then, Eve walks into the room, stopping at the bed. " Oh hay Heather, I almost forgot you'd be cumming to the Academy this year," she says.
" Yeah, It's so nice to see you again," Heather says back.
" Do you guys know each other or something? " I asked, surprised.
" Oh yeah, Eve lived right right down the street from me for some time, but then I moved." says Heather.
" Yeah," says Eve, " We some how were assigned alot of our jobs together, so we got to know each other "
" Well this was fun and all but I am going to go to sleep, so, good night, " I say.
" Aren't you forgetting something?" Eve says, smiling. I look down at myself. Pajamas.
" After I get my pajamas on, " I correct. They both laugh. I quickly get ready, and lie in bed. It isn't quite nine yet, so it is hard to sleep.
Instade, I start to think. I think about what I would do with my life if I am Chosen. I wonder. Will I be a doctor, like my dad? or a profetional sports player? What about an Ambassador? No. They are only the best of the best. But would I want it? I don't think I know the answer. But one thing is clear to me. I don't know what I am or what I'm good at, but whatever I am, I want to be a good one.
