- Five -

“Ain’t it fun, living in the real world”, the speakers of my computer were blasting as I sang to the lyrics and jumped up and down in my bedroom. “Ain’t it good living life alone?”

Fun fact: Sometimes I like turning the volume really high and sing at the top of my lungs pretending I’m Hayley Williams. She is so awesome and her voice is just perfect. I love how confident and the way she dyes her hair. So cool. So so cool. I wish I could gather the guts to do it or at least change it a bit. My hair was dirty blonde and an ombre look was as far as I got to dye it.

As I kept on my little concert, I heard a knock on my already opened door.

“Were you aware of the fact that knocking goes before opening the door?” I said as I put my deodorant bottle down (aka my microphone) on my desk.

“Were you aware of the fact that you cannot sing to save your life?” Ladies and gentleman, I present you to Simon, my lovely brother. I just scoffed at his comment because (in my head) I was fabulous. “Lunch is ready”.

“Let me guess. Roast chicken and smashed potatoes?” He nodded eagerly. Mum always made his favourite food when he was home for lunch. He’s such a momma’s boy but will never admit it.

“Come on, rockstar. I’m starving”. Sometimes he was such a pain in the ass but he was my brother and I loved him and all that drill.

Simon decided to spend the day at home and this visit was a surprise for both my mum and me. He hadn’t brought a girl with him! Over the years, we got used to see him with different “girlfriends” every time he had to come home for a family reunion or whatever the occasion was. My mum wasn’t thrilled about this but she didn’t say anything (in his presence). No, she wouldn’t say anything that could hurt her beloved son. Instead, she told me how much it bothered her and I had to bare all her rants. My job was to suck it up and listen to her. Thanks Rowling she worked a lot and she wasn’t home much or I would have killed my brother by now.

Simon was four years older than me and he had been living by himself for three years. Imagine my mother when he told her! She didn’t want him to leave but dad supported his decision (and I had to listen to my mum rants). My brother had a well-paid job in a bureau and really good marks at Law School. He got his diploma in the right time despite what mum had said (“now that you live alone, you will jeopardize your studies and focus on parties and social events” and blablabla). Parents are not always right and I’m sure Simon must have felt proud of himself for proving them wrong. I’m a proud sister, too.

We had a good and quite common brother and sister relationship. We talked to each other on the phone at least twice a week and I sometimes paid him a visit. Maybe we didn’t tell each other everything but we were close in our own way. I would have kicked any bitch’s ass that dared to hurt him and he would have done the same the other way around.

Lunch was pretty good and we talked a lot. The best part was that dad got off of work earlier as he had to fly to Berlin with mum at night. So, we had a perfect family dinner. I was surprised that it was going so well but the fact that we weren’t sharing the table with some unknown girl helped a lot.

“So, we are leaving at 6”, my dad informed us as we sat in the living room watching some random sitcom.
