Holding hands while walking down the London streets must be an amazing feeling. I wouldn’t know as I don’t have a significant other to share this with. My thoughts were running through my head as if they had just taken an energy drink. I was just going back home after a long day at university, travelling through London city on a bus full of strangers. I still lived with my parents because I went to the University of London and it was close to my house. So, I was on the bus. It was just a common day in my ordinary life.
Yeah, just a common day… Shit. I fell asleep with my mouth open like a polar bear floor rug, again! Great. Suddenly I felt something hit me on the face. It smelled like a book (yes, I can recognize that smell. Nerd much?) and considering the fact it hurt, it was a hard covered book. When I turned to my left to see what that had been, I felt as if my heart had skipped a bit. I met what I considered the most beautiful eyes that a human being can have.
“I’m so sorry. Are you okay?” he said in a really amazing thick accent, looking straight through my soul. Yes, I know. I bit melodramatic. I had just woken up so there you have my excuse.
“At least let me know if it is a book worth being hit with” I replied trying to fix my hair a bit.
“It’s The Fault in Our Stars by John Green”. He said showing me the light blue cover that has made me cry a lot in the past.
“Oh, that’s good. So, you can hit me again but try not to aim it to my nose. It hurts and surgery is quite expensive” I attempted a joke.
“You are funny” he said laughing as if it had been a really good joke (which it wasn’t) and showing his perfect teeth. “I’m Luke. What’s your name?”
“I’m Isabella. Nice to meet you, Luke. So, I’m guessing that you’re not from here. I mean, your accent…”, I trailed off as my eyes spotted something I hadn’t noticed before for some unknown reason that I assume was my tiredness. A black lip ring on his bottom lip near the left corner of his mouth. Shit.
“No, I’ve recently moved from Sydney in Australia” He said while putting the book in his bag completely oblivious of the fact my mouth was slightly agape and my eyes were fixed on his lips. That movement made me break that sort of trance I was in and looked out of the window for a moment trying to put my act together. I took a long breath and look at him again to find those deep blue eyes (had I mention they were as blue as the ocean?) staring at me.
“Oh, that’s- that’s awesome”, I stuttered. Great. “I mean, that you are from Australia. I’ve always wanted to go there. It’s like second on my list”.
“Cool! I love it there. Sometimes I get a bit homesick”, he said and I could sense a hint of sadness in eyes. “Don’t get me wrong. I love London and I came here with my parents and my little sister but I left friends back home and my two older brothers stayed there, too. Their girlfriends live there, that’s why”.
“No, I understand. It must be difficult. I mean, I don’t know what I would do without my friends”. I tried to give him a sympathetic smile but I’m not sure if I accomplished that. I can be such a dork sometimes. Okay, most of the time.
“So, tell me about yourself” he said, changing the subject.
“Mmm there’s not much to say. Pretty boring life!” I laughed. I was so lame. “I’m at uni studying Journalism and sometimes I write for a magazine about music. Sometimes they pay me, sometimes they don’t but it’s a really good experience. I get to go to different concerts or events and take tons of pictures”. I love journalism. I do. I do. I do. And writing has always been my passion. “And that’s about it. I’m just an ordinary girl”.
“There is something about you that would never make me describe you as ordinary”, he said and smirked. His lip piercing popping slightly.
I awkwardly laughed because, let’s be honest, practically everything I do is awkward. I’m the awkward master. Yay. Then, I smiled and I looked into his eyes. God. Those eyes. Okay, I was awkwardly staring at him.
“Okay. So, how would you describe me?” I dared to ask. That was me flirting with a cute guy. That was all my game. I sucked at flirting.
“Mmm”, he rubbed his chin with his index finger and thumb and squeezed his eyes a bit pretending he was thinking hard about my question. Cute. Luke was definitely cute. “I’m not able to make an accurate description as I have no sufficient arguments to support it” he said chuckling.
“Oh, watch out! We have a smart ass over here”. I could not help but laugh at his choice of words. Neither could he.
“But”, he quickly added “I would like to get to know you better”. And I was dead right there on the spot.
He really took me by surprise. I scanned his face to notice on his cheeks a tint of red. He bit his lip with a shy smile. His eyes were also smiling. Yes, his eyes were capable of many things. For example, they could leave me speechless or make me blush. He could save a dying penguin by just looking at it. True story.
“Sure” I said. I was so lost in his eyes that nothing but that came out of my mouth. However, that seemed to be enough for him because a grin was plastered on his face.
“Okay, Isabella. This is where I have to get off”, he said. “Oh, wait! Give me your phone”.
I obeyed without hesitation. He started typing and then said: “Ready. Text me anytime”. He winked as he gave me my phone back and our fingers slightly brushed. I smiled as I felt a heat going up my cheeks. While he was getting off the bus he waved at me and I said: “Okay, take care”.
Take care?!?! Who am I? His grandma? I need to work on my speech.
