It was a cold morning, damp and crisp. Peridot rubbed her eyes and pushed on her glasses as she looked out of the window; the early sun glinting off of the shining collage of fallen leaves on the ground. She tore herself away from her bed and stumbled into the kitchen. Nobody else was awake yet. With the water boiling and the mug set in place, Peridot watched the coffee granules tumble into the mug gracefully, with one exception. A particularly oddly shaped grain missed the cup and hit the floor with a soft tap.
"Huh, looks like I'm not the only defect to fall out of line." Peridot thought to herself as she gently picked up the stray and dropped it in with the rest of them. Yawning, she opened the fridge to find an empty bottle of milk.
"Amethyst..." She growled before chucking the empty carton aside. Peridot finished preparing her drink without the dairy and sat down at the table. The hard wooden surface felt cold and unforgiving.
"Peridot." Peridot looked up, startled.
"G-garnet!" Garnet chuckled,
"Good morning to you too, sleep well?"
"Of course I did! Best night I've had since last night!" Peridot lied. The taller girl raised an eyebrow before turning to the fridge. She looked down and saw the empty carton on its side.
"Amethyst, you need to stop drinking all of the milk in the night." A small girl in a tank top stopped in her tracks behind Garnet.
"H-how did you kno-"
"I heard you coming from a mile away, also, there's a spider by your foot." Amethyst screeched and clung onto the closest thing to her, which just so happened to be Pearl.
"Oh please Amethyst, it's nothing to be afraid of."
"Those things can be radioactive Pearl, RADIOACTIVE!!" After a discerning look, Pearl tore Amethyst from her arm and turned to talk to Garnet. Peridot watched the group of roommates converse for a while, before putting down her mug and leaving the cold leather chair. After pulling some jeans on and donning a hat and scarf, she silently closed the front door behind her, and began walking along the frosty, pale sand. She booted a can along the beach and sighed,
"I'm useless here. The others don't need me; Garnet's got her fancy cop job, Pearl's a first responder for God's sake and Amethyst... Does something..." She paused,
"But I don't..." Peridot mumbled to herself, tears welling up in her eyes.
"They must pity me, they must think I can't be trusted with anything, but they couldn't just kick me out after all these years. I mean, why else would they keep me?" She sat beside a felled tree, cut down by one of Pearl's colleagues during a simple training session. It all seemed unreal to Peridot, Beach City, the Crystal Gems, her life here. She didn't deserve this. She buried her head in her lap as she struggled for air; her face now drenched in tears.
"Maybe I should just leave, I'm sure they wouldn't miss me anyway. They didn't have the heart to throw me out, so maybe I should just do it for them." She took a deep breath,
"I heard Empire City is nice this time of year. I could go to school, live in an apartment with adults who care about me, heck, I could have a normal life." She suddenly stopped.
"I-I could finally be like every other 17 year old girl." She stood up. Peridot had made up her mind."Goodbye, Beach City."
