Eldara rolled over in bed, swatting away the insistent hand of her mother, who was slapping her across the face, trying in vain to get her daughter to wake up.
"Mom..." She grumbled, "I don wanna get up..."
"You have to go to school, Eldara, whether you like it or not. Now get up or you're going to be late!"
"But I don wanna go to school..." Eldara buried her face further into her pillow, trying to get back to sleep.
"Do I need to get a bucket of lanna to dump on you?" Shenia, Eldara's mother, threatened.
"Fine, fine, I'm getting up..." Eldara swung her legs over the side of her bed, holding her head as all of the iana rushed from her head to her feet.
"And take a shower! You're starting to smell!"
"Mom... Does it really matter? I mean, no one's really going to notice..."
Shenia gave Eldara the Look, but got only a yawn in return.
"Teenagers..." She mumbled before going off to do whatever moms do in the morning.
Sensing her mother leave the room, Eldara shot up, shut the door, dumped a bucket of lanna on her head, got dressed, and bounded out the window to meet up with her friend, Lanar; after all, it was only Shi-ana -- no where near Aya, or the time to leave for school. Reaching the nearby grove of Linna-asha-anya trees, Eldara dove down the designated trunk to meet Lanar.
Her hands finding the handhold, Eldara swung into the cavern that was the two's hideout, study, and fortress, hidden away from the prying eyes of adults.
As expected, Lanar was there; the Eldarian was an early riser.
"Hey." Lanar said without looking up from the book she was reading, "I'm surprised you woke up this early."
Eldara flicked her friend playfully, "Just because I woke up at Shi-ana doesn't mean that I woke up early. You're the early riser, waking up at Ie'na each day."
"Well, if you decided to go to sleep before Kay'a, you wouldn't have such a hard time waking up."
"Ah, whatever. Like that's going to happen anytime soon."
"True, true."
"So what'cha reading?"
"Nothing much; just an old Earth book I salvaged on that school field trip. I'm trying to translate it right now. So far, I've got the title, genre, and the first few chapters, which puts it as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, fiction, and a very good read; much better than the other novel I stol- I mean, salvaged, a book called Twilight."
Eldara sat down on the couch-like structure next to her friend. "Oh yeah, I remember that book. It was complete biij, don't you agree?"
"It was."
"Yeah..." She glanced toward the clock. "Look at the time! It's almost Aya!"
Lanar straightened. "You're right! We should probably head back up."
School
The duo sat in their desks right before the bell rang, almost late for Astronomy, the first class of the day.
When Mr. Ash'ion walked in the door, everyone was surprised, as he was followed by Annor'ya Polpra, the most renowned Earth scientist to every walk the face of the Jupiter. (1)
The class was silent, waiting for someone to say something, anything.
Then Annor'ya Polpra began to speak.
*** Guide! ***
Lanna = what they use instead of water for many things, including, yes, showers.
Iana = Basically what they have instead of blood.
Shi-ana = The fifth part of the day
Aya = the 8th part of the day, when students are allowed to get the materials required from their lockers for class.
Linna-asha-anya trees = the trees that are native to this specific section of Jupiter, the color of their blooms establishing the time rotation for this specific region. They are also called Linna trees for short.
Le'na = The third part of the day, when the Linn-asha-anya trees' blooms begin to reopen.
Kay'a = The 27th part of the day, very late in the cycle.
Biij = Rubbish, as in stupid or unworthy of recognition; Twilight is a great example of biij.
