When Eldara got home that evening at sumana, she met her mother at the school gates, as she always had.
"Mother," She prompted, "Who... who was my father?"
Shenia sighed- she knew this day would come eventually.
Starting to walk, she began to speak.
"Your father was Manar by'Sol, a kind man through and through. We met as children, and remained friends throughout the years, but his family was a scientific one, and he was soon called away to continue the tradition.
"While he was diligent in his work, he did not enjoy just sitting around all day, doing experiments. He wanted to explore, to be an adventurer, to go on the far side of our planet.
"But no one agreed with his ideas, for, not only did he want to go on the far side, he wanted to pierce through the atmosphere and travel to Earth.
"Soon after his idea was let out to the public, people grew frightened- would our peaceful lifestyle disappear? Would it really be possible to have peaceful relations with the humans?
"People were frightened, dear one, for they were scared of anything that would change the daily cycle of life."
She paused, tears beginning to well in her eyes.
"But then... but then a fire struck out, rampaging through the lab.
"Your father has never been seen since.
"No-nothing was left, Eldara, not even an ash to bury."
Despite her mother's best efforts, tears broke through, running down her face. She ran inside, trying vainly to hide the evidence of her sorrow.
Eldara was lost for words- what happened to her father? Had he escaped? Why hadn't she ever heard his name before?
What was her father's fate?
Was he alive?
If so, why hadn't he returned to her family?
It was a mystery that she was determined to solve, no matter what the cost.
