The next day in school , I momentarily forgot about the problems earlier in my life; do to the anticipation of hanging out with Jordan after school. My dad and step mom was asleep when I left for school this morning , Deonta didn't come to class ; overall today is pretty good. Until I got to lunch. I have been successfully avoiding Paul all day, but when I sit down at the lunch table our eyes meet. He heads my way , and I get up in an attempt to continue my avoidance . But before I can leave , and before Paul can get to me ,Jordan completely intercepts .
" If you didn't want to eat lunch with me, just say it. You don't have to run away ." Jordan says , sitting down in the chair next to me .
" Trust it's not you that I do not want to eat lunch with ." Jordan looks around the room to look for the person I may be talking about.
" Someone bothering you ? " he asked , not finding the person. Paul had disappeared , and I was grateful.
"It's nothing, just someone who won't stay gone. "
" hmh, a guy that can't get enough huh?" Jordan says, kind of jokingly; it's hard to tell.
" So , why are you in the cafe? I have never seen you in here ." I ask him to change the subject .
" but your always in here , so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about ." He says grabbing a soggy fry off my plate.
" If you are never in here, how do you know I am always in here?" I asked feel, like a smart ass for thinking that I'm cornering him.
" Ha, you LOOK like you would come here daily. Lunch is where you are supposed to be, and you do everything you are supposed to do ."
" Not true! I don't eat in here every lunch ! " I say defensively .
" The library doing work does not count , technically you're supposed to do your work too." He says not making contact , but just continuing to eat my fries.
" Well I mean , it's not like I have any friends to hang out with ." I say in a very small voice . Then he stops eating, and looks at me. I couldn't look at him though, I am to embarrassed at this point. A teenage girl , without a single friend. Something is clearly wrong with me.
" Hey, don't feel bad to not have friends at this school. With people like these to choose from, you're better off alone. " He says sounding sweet until .... " I mean , it's not like you could make it in our world anyway. Look at you ."
" And what is that supposed to mean !? " I ask not knowing if that was a compliment or an insult .
" like if you were a prostitute, it would kind of be like the pretty women movie. Just somehow someone would take you away from that big bad life, because you and that life just don't mix. And sorry to say, but your whole demeanor screams ' save me '". He says with that smirk .
" well sorry to tell you this, but I don't need saving ."
" Yeah, okay. We still on for today ?" He asked , ending the conversation before the bell rings.
" Oh is that a question ?" I asks to mock him. Then I look up at him and sees a huge grin across his face, for the first time I see deep dimples indented in his cheeks . " Meet me at the back parking lot after school ". Then he left.
************
After school, I go straight to the parking lot, to see Jordan leaning on his dark blue truck.
" Ugh , took you long enough. I've been waiting for forever ." He said with slight annoyance .
" I came , right after class."
