Of all days, of all fu king days! Maya banged her fists in the steering wheel, of course, the first week in a foreign country, no hold that thought, in a foreign continent and she gets the first flat tire of her life. She had pulled her car over on the side of the sleepy country road. The Texas sun seemed to laugh at her as it stared her directly in the eye. She felt the sweat on her forehead as she rested it against the steering wheel in defeat, the humidity of the car hugged her like a too tight fur coat. She put her hand out groping for the turny thing to lower the window, As she touched it a tapping on the window froze her actions, She jerked up from her place of rest. She grabbed the pepper spray her mom put firmly in her hands at the airport. She looked towards the window, a tall figure in a cowboy hat greeted her with the raising of two fingers towards said hat. She waved lightly and sheepishly towards the figure, he gestured for her to roll down her window. Still clutching her pepper spray, Maya carefully rolled her window down a few centimeters. "Howdy there ma'am, I saw that you were having trouble with your car and thought I could help" the mystery man had a deep throaty voice with a thick Texan drawl. " Oh shame thank you so much, I think my tire burst", even she sounded hysterical to her own ears. "Sorry I don't even know where the jack is or anything" she wrung her hands out in front of her apologetically . "No worries I'll just grab mine" as he jogged back to his truck she thought, that's what it was called, not a bakkie here a truck. As he jogged she noticed how hot this stranger was not just your average "why hello there hot" but like the slap me silly and call me sally hot. He was wearing jeans and cowboy boots with carved details too delicate to see from so far, his shirt was tucked neatly within his jeans and as he returned she eyed the jack carried in his hands. She stepped out the car releasing her pepper spray can feeling silly that she doubted the southerner. "This won't take too long" he assured her whilst bending down to place the jack under the car, "oh I'm in no rush, just thanking the heavens that you arrived" Maya blurted out. "That's what all the ladies say around here" the stranger said with a smirk exposing the deep dimples carved in his smile. Oh that infamous southern charm Maya thought as she cursed herself for blushing again, you aren't a 13 year old school girl, stop blushing, she thought to herself. Maya gazed at her new car suddenly feeling very exhausted, she had hopped straight off the plane after a 36 hour flight from Johburg to Houston and picked up a rental car to get to the university she had yet to see. She leaned against the bonnet, using her thumb and forefinger to rub the bridge of her nose between her eyes. Texas man was finishing up and putting the burst tire back in the spares position. "Now you're gonna have to pop down to the shop to have your old one repaired, when you get to wherever you going" he said eyebrows furrowing in concern for this obvious foreign woman Maya thought to herself that she was obviously foreign. "Thank you so much, I honestly don't know what I would have done without you, I haven't even gotten an American SIM card and goodness knows where I am, but I think my destination isn't too far from here" she laughed embarrassed. "Anyway, I'm Maya" she said reaching for a handshake, "thank you so much for everything", he took his hand in hers and she lost her thought when his calloused, warm hand engulfed hers . "I'm Connor Williams and it was no problem Maya, happy to help" when Connor smiled she realized what a state she must have looked . "Anyway I best be off" he said as he withdrew the hand Maya was still clutching, "oh god, yes I'm sorry" Maya laughed nervously, kicking herself for losing herself in that southern smile. He obviously had places to be and didn't plan on stopping to aid a hopeless such as herself. "Anyway, thanks again.". She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear and smiled softly up at him. "I'll hopefully be seeing you around Maya" he said almost as if trying the sound of her name. "Same here" Maya said climbing back into her car, noticing that as Connor jogged back to his truck and hopped in, he waited until she was safe on the road again before putting his indicator on and driving back in the opposite direction.
